Twain

A go-to-market research agent that writes signal-based outreach, priced per lead researched

As of 31 August 2026, Twain is free to use. Twain researches prospects across the web and generates personalised outreach from what it finds, billed per lead rather than per seat. Softwr lists it under Sales Enablement. Twain is available on Web.

Overview

What Twain does

Twain, built in Berlin, runs live web research on each prospect, then writes multi-channel outreach grounded in the signals it found, adapting to the persona you have defined. It works in bulk across a contact list and is API-first, so the intended deployment is inside whatever sequencer you already run rather than as another interface your reps have to visit. Credits meter the work, one credit per lead researched, and team seats are included rather than charged separately. The critical fact for anyone with Twain on a list is that this is a pivoted product. The original Twain was an assistant that critiqued and scored sales emails, sold at around nineteen dollars a month, and it is effectively gone. The current Twain is a research agent competing with Clay, Coldreach and Unify, at a reported starting point around $185 a month for a thousand researched leads, with a pay-as-you-go route from about thirty dollars for a hundred credits and a free tier covering five hundred contacts. Those figures render client-side and come from third-party sources, so verify in-app. The comparison set, the budget and the internal buyer all change with the pivot. The honest trade-offs are scope and company risk. Twain researches and writes but does not send, so you still pay for a sequencer and, unless your list is already good, a data vendor. Credits are consumed per lead researched rather than per usable email produced, which transfers the cost of a bad list to you. And the company has raised only a 2.5 million euro pre-seed from Sequoia and others in May 2022 with nothing publicly disclosed since, alongside a full product pivot. Avoid annual prepayment and keep an export path out of any deep API coupling.

What people use it for

  • A team running lemlist or Outreach that wants each prospect researched and the first line written without adding another interface to the rep workflow.
  • An agency generating outbound copy for several clients that needs research and drafting metered by volume rather than by seat.
  • A revenue operations team wanting to embed personalised copy generation into an existing sequence via API rather than buying a full replacement platform.
  • A founder-led sales motion sending low volume but high-effort outreach, where researching each account manually is the actual bottleneck.

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Twain.

  • Twain researches and writes but does not send, so a sequencer subscription and, in most cases, a data vendor sit on top of the reported $185 a month, and the total stack cost is what you should be comparing.
  • Credits are consumed per lead researched rather than per usable email produced, so a poor list burns credits and returns nothing, transferring the cost of list hygiene entirely to you.
  • Reviewers report generic and insufficiently industry-specific output, along with generated wording they would never use, and there is no blanket blocklist or banned-words control, which is a blocker for brand-sensitive or regulated senders.
  • Persona management scales badly: reviewers report having to re-import all company data every time a new persona is added, which is painful for agencies and multi-product teams.
  • The company has publicly disclosed only a 2.5 million euro pre-seed from May 2022 and has since executed a full product pivot, so the risk of another pivot or a shutdown mid-contract is elevated; avoid annual prepayment and deep API coupling without an export route.
  • Integration and documentation surface is thin after the pivot: the legacy connector list is not confirmed on the current site, and for a product marketed as API-first the developer documentation is a genuine gap.
  • Pricing figures load client-side and are largely third-party sourced, and there is effectively one paid plan rather than a tier ladder, so budgeting requires an in-app check rather than a published page.

Each pairing was judged by two reviewers asking whether a buyer would genuinely weigh the two against each other. The ones that failed were deleted rather than published.

Questions people ask

Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

Is this the email critique tool from a few years ago?

No. Twain pivoted. The $19 a month email scoring assistant is gone. The current product is a research agent that generates outreach, priced per lead researched.

Does Twain send the emails?

No. It researches and writes. You still need a sequencer, and Twain is designed to plug into one via API.

Can I try it without paying?

Yes. The free tier covers 500 contacts with no card required.

Who does it compete with now?

Clay, Coldreach and Unify, not Lavender or Regie. The pivot moved it into a different category and a different budget line.
