Overview

What LabVIEW does

LabVIEW is a development environment where programs are drawn as wired block diagrams in a dataflow language called G rather than written as text. Each program, a virtual instrument, has a front panel of controls and indicators and a diagram of the logic behind it. Parallel execution is implicit in the wiring, which is why it suits test benches that must read several instruments, drive a stimulus and log results at once. It talks to more than seven thousand instrument drivers over GPIB, serial, Ethernet and PXI, and compiles to Windows, real-time targets and FPGAs on NI CompactRIO hardware. The fact that should shape a purchase decision is ownership. National Instruments was acquired by Emerson, completing in 2023, so LabVIEW is now a line in an industrial automation conglomerate rather than the flagship of a test-and-measurement company. NI also moved from perpetual licences toward subscription, and although both models remain available with, in NI’s own words, no functional differences between them, the direction of travel for maintenance and support pricing is clear. Buyers are test engineers in aerospace, automotive, semiconductor and medical device manufacturing, plus university laboratories. The trade-off is that LabVIEW is a commitment to a hardware and licensing ecosystem. Graphical code is genuinely hard to diff, review and merge in git; the people who can maintain it are a smaller labour pool than Python engineers; and rewriting a decade-old test rig in anything else is a project nobody funds. That is the real reason LabVIEW estates persist.

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about LabVIEW.

  • NI is now part of Emerson, completing in 2023, so LabVIEW sits inside an industrial automation conglomerate rather than being the flagship of a dedicated test company; roadmap priorities and support pricing follow the parent, not the user base.
  • No prices appear anywhere on the NI site for commercial editions; Base, Full, Professional and the LabVIEW+ suite are all quoted through NI or a reseller, so a buyer cannot compare cost against a Python-plus-PyVISA alternative without opening a sales conversation.
  • Graphical source code diffs badly. Merging two engineers’ changes to the same virtual instrument in git is impractical without NI’s own comparison tools, so team development on LabVIEW is slower and more serialised than on text-based languages.
  • The pool of engineers who write LabVIEW is small and ageing relative to the pool who write Python, so hiring a replacement for the person who built your test rig is materially harder and more expensive than replacing a general software engineer.
  • The environment pulls you toward NI hardware and NI add-on toolkits, and licences for real-time, FPGA and vision modules are sold separately on top of the base edition, so the quoted LabVIEW price is rarely the delivered cost of a working test system.
