PTC Windchill

Enterprise PLM for regulated hardware, priced entirely by negotiation

As of 31 August 2026, PTC Windchill's pricing is not published; the vendor quotes on request. A product lifecycle management system for discrete manufacturers who need controlled BOMs, change orders and configuration management across CAD, ERP and service. Softwr lists it under Manufacturing. PTC Windchill is made by PTC Inc., available on Web, Windows, On-premise, Cloud.

Overview

What PTC Windchill does

Windchill is PTC product lifecycle management platform: a controlled repository for parts, documents, bills of materials and change orders, with configuration management, variant handling, quality and regulatory modules, and deep integration into PTC Creo as well as third-party CAD. It runs on-premises, in a customer cloud tenancy or as PTC-hosted SaaS, and is aimed at organisations where an uncontrolled engineering change is a safety or compliance event, not just an inconvenience. The distinguishing capability is BOM transformation: Windchill can hold engineering, manufacturing and service views of the same product structure and keep them reconciled as changes propagate, including plant-specific manufacturing BOMs. That is the reason large aerospace, medical device and industrial equipment firms tolerate the cost. Systems that only manage an engineering BOM push the reconciliation work into ERP or spreadsheets, where it stops being auditable. Buyers are typically manufacturers with several hundred engineers upward, often driven by ISO 13485, AS9100 or IATF 16949 requirements. The trade-off is total cost and time. Nothing is published; licensing runs on role-based tiers from Viewer through Contributor and Editor to Administrator, annual support sits in the low-to-mid teens as a percentage of licence value, and services commonly account for the majority of three-year cost. Budget for a multi-year programme with a systems integrator, not a software purchase.

What people use it for

  • A medical device manufacturer needing a design history file and audit-ready change control for FDA and MDR submissions
  • An aerospace supplier reconciling engineering and plant-specific manufacturing BOMs across multiple factories
  • An industrial equipment firm managing configurable product families where every unit shipped has a different option set
  • A company standardising on Creo that wants CAD data management and PLM from one vendor rather than two

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about PTC Windchill.

  • No pricing is published at any tier, and per-user rates are heavily negotiable on multi-year commitments, so the first quote a buyer receives is rarely the achievable price and small buyers without volume have little leverage.
  • Implementation dominates cost: data migration, configuration and training routinely account for the majority of three-year total cost of ownership, and large programmes run into seven figures of services.
  • Annual support and maintenance is charged as a percentage of licence value in the low-to-mid teens, so the bill continues indefinitely even in years when nothing is upgraded.
  • Upgrades between major releases are projects rather than updates, particularly where the deployment has been customised, and heavily customised sites often sit several versions behind.
  • The role-based licence tiers mean occasional participants such as purchasing or quality still consume paid seats unless you deploy Windchill Navigate, which is a further product to buy and configure.

Answered, with sources

Questions people ask

Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

Is a perpetual licence still available?

PTC has moved decisively to subscription and now positions Windchill as a subscription product. Existing perpetual estates are supported but new perpetual sales are not the default route and should not be assumed.

How much does Windchill cost?

PTC publishes nothing. Expect role-tiered per-user subscription plus modules, plus support at a percentage of licence value, plus implementation services that usually exceed the software.

Does it require Creo?

No. Creo integration is deepest, but connectors exist for SolidWorks, NX, CATIA and Inventor. Mixed-CAD sites are common.

Is it overkill for a hundred-person hardware company?

Usually yes, unless you are in a regulated sector. Below that scale a cloud-native PLM will reach useful state in weeks rather than quarters.
