What Arena PLM does
Arena is a multi-tenant cloud PLM that manages parts, bills of materials, approved manufacturer lists, engineering change orders and item revisions, with a quality module handling corrective actions, complaints, training records and design history files. It was cloud-only from the start, which is why it typically goes live in weeks rather than the quarters an on-premises PLM takes, and why it is common in venture-funded hardware companies that have no IT department to speak of. The distinguishing capability is the tight coupling between the BOM and supply chain data. Arena maintains manufacturer and supplier part numbers, lifecycle status and compliance data such as RoHS and REACH against each item, and surfaces end-of-life and non-compliance risk against your live BOM. For an electronics company, this is the difference between discovering a component is obsolete during design review and discovering it when the contract manufacturer cannot buy it. Buyers are typically hardware startups scaling into production, medical device companies needing a validated quality system, and electronics manufacturers with a contract manufacturing partner who needs controlled access to the BOM. The trade-off is ownership: since PTC acquired Arena, Arena is the small end of a portfolio whose strategic product is Windchill.
