AVEVA System Platform

Supervisory HMI and SCADA platform, formerly sold as Wonderware System Platform

As of 1 September 2026, AVEVA System Platform's pricing is not published; the vendor quotes on request. The product most people still call Wonderware. Softwr lists it under Manufacturing. AVEVA System Platform is made by AVEVA Group Limited, available on Windows.

Overview

What AVEVA System Platform does

AVEVA System Platform is a supervisory control and HMI platform built on the ArchestrA object model, with InTouch HMI as the visualisation layer and AVEVA Historian for time-series storage. Objects are templated once and instanced across a plant, so a hundred identical pumps share one definition, and changes propagate. It is licensed by I/O count, client count and platform nodes, and it sits above PLCs rather than replacing them. The commercially important fact is the name and the licensing. Wonderware ceased to be a purchasable brand after Schneider Electric merged Wonderware into AVEVA; the products are now AVEVA System Platform, AVEVA InTouch HMI, AVEVA Historian and AVEVA Plant SCADA (formerly Citect). AVEVA has pushed customers onto AVEVA Flex, a subscription token pool that lets you draw down different products from a shared credit balance. Flex is more flexible in principle, but it converts what used to be a depreciating capital asset with a roughly 20 percent annual support fee into a recurring operating cost that never stops, and existing perpetual holders face pressure at each renewal. Who buys it: food and beverage, water, pharmaceutical, and discrete plants that need a supervisory layer over mixed PLC estates, plus system integrators who have built a decade of ArchestrA templates and cannot economically move them. The trade-off is that the object model that makes large systems maintainable also makes small systems overengineered, and the integrator skill set is a narrower pool than it was.

What people use it for

  • A multi-site food manufacturer standardising operator screens across plants that run different PLC brands
  • A water utility with a decade of ArchestrA templates where rewriting to another platform cannot be justified
  • A pharmaceutical line needing ISA-88 batch recipe handling above existing Rockwell and Siemens controllers
  • A plant modernising legacy InTouch applications without discarding the existing screens and scripts

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about AVEVA System Platform.

  • Wonderware is no longer a name you can buy; if you have inherited documentation, purchase orders or job specifications that say Wonderware, everything has to be re-mapped to AVEVA product names before you can quote it.
  • AVEVA Flex converts licensing to a recurring subscription draw-down, so organisations that budgeted for a perpetual licence with a support percentage face a materially different cost model at renewal.
  • It is Windows only, and version compatibility between System Platform, Historian and InTouch is tight, so upgrades are coordinated projects rather than incremental patches.
  • The ArchestrA object model has a steep learning curve and small systems end up paying for structure they do not need, which is why integrators often deploy standalone InTouch instead.
  • Licence enforcement counts I/O aggressively and unexpected tag growth during commissioning can trigger a mid-project licence purchase at list price.

Questions people ask

Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

Is Wonderware still sold?

No. The brand was retired; buy AVEVA System Platform, AVEVA InTouch HMI, AVEVA Historian or AVEVA Plant SCADA instead.

Can I still buy a perpetual licence?

AVEVA steers new business to Flex subscriptions. Perpetual is increasingly restricted to existing agreements and renewals.

Do my old InTouch applications still run?

Yes, legacy InTouch applications are supported in System Platform, though the older graphics do not gain the newer situational-awareness features without rework.

What is AVEVA Flex?

A subscription credit pool you draw against for any AVEVA product, which trades a fixed licence for a recurring balance you must keep topped up.

Softwr does not host reviews and shows no star rating for AVEVA System Platform, because a rating we did not collect is not ours to publish.
