What Litmus Edge does
Litmus Edge is software that runs on industrial edge hardware or a virtual machine inside a plant and connects to PLCs, CNC controllers, robots, historians and sensors using a large prebuilt driver library. It normalises that data into a common model, applies edge-side filtering and computation, and forwards it to cloud platforms, message brokers and enterprise systems. Litmus Edge Manager handles fleet deployment and configuration across many sites, which is the part that separates it from running an open-source broker on a plant PC. The distinguishing point is that Litmus deliberately does not try to be the analytics or MES layer. It aims to be the data acquisition tier that everyone else consumes, which makes it complementary to cloud analytics rather than competitive with them, and explains its partnerships across hyperscalers. Commercially that is a difficult place to sit, because buyers are being asked to pay enterprise software prices for infrastructure they can partly assemble from open-source components, and the value only becomes obvious at multi-site scale where manually maintaining edge configurations is genuinely painful. Buyers are manufacturers with many plants and heterogeneous controller estates who are trying to get data into a cloud platform without writing one integration per PLC vendor. The trade-off is that pricing is by site and data point rather than by volume, published packages start at a level that makes a single-site pilot look expensive, and a customer with three sites and modest tag counts will usually find that a Litmus deployment costs more than the analytics it feeds.
