QuickBooks: Smart, simple online accounting software for small business

Multi currency business accounts, international payments and card issuing from a licensed payments firm rather than a bank
As of 30 August 2026, Airwallex is free to use. Airwallex gives a company local currency receiving accounts in several countries, cheaper cross border transfers than a bank, and issuable cards. Softwr lists it under Accounting.
Overview
Airwallex is a financial services company, founded in Australia and now operating across Asia Pacific, Europe, the United Kingdom and North America, that provides multi currency business accounts, international transfers, foreign exchange conversion, corporate card issuing, expense management and a payments gateway. Customers can hold balances in multiple currencies, receive into local account details in supported markets so that a customer in the United States pays a domestic account rather than sending an international wire, convert between currencies at a rate close to interbank, and pay out locally in many countries. The distinguishing thing is the local receiving and paying network. A business selling into several countries would traditionally either open a bank account in each of them, which requires local presence and takes months, or accept international wires with correspondent fees and poor rates on both sides. Airwallex collapses that into one account structure with local details attached, and the cost saving on foreign exchange is usually the number that carries the business case. That is a treasury proposition rather than an accounting one. The buyers are exporters, e-commerce and marketplace sellers, agencies with overseas clients, and startups paying contractors abroad. The trade off is regulatory rather than functional. Airwallex holds payment institution and equivalent licences in the markets it serves rather than banking licences, so customer funds are held in safeguarding accounts at partner banks and are not covered by deposit guarantee schemes; if the firm fails, recovery is through the safeguarding regime and not through a deposit insurer. Which entity you contract with also determines which currencies, card programmes and features are available to you, so two customers describing the same product can have materially different experiences depending on where their company is registered.
The honest half
Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Airwallex.
Cross-shopped
Each pairing was judged by two reviewers asking whether a buyer would genuinely weigh the two against each other. The ones that failed were deleted rather than published.

Answered, with sources
Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.
No. It holds payment institution, electronic money or equivalent licences in the markets it serves. Funds are safeguarded at partner banks rather than being deposits, and deposit insurance schemes do not apply.
For many operating flows it can, but consider what you lose: no deposit protection, no lending relationship, no cash or cheque handling, and some counterparties and government bodies still expect a conventional bank account. Most users run it alongside a bank rather than instead of one.
It serves entities registered in a defined list of markets across Asia Pacific, Europe, the United Kingdom, the Middle East and North America, and the list changes. Check for your specific country of incorporation, because the answer determines both eligibility and feature set.
It integrates with the mainstream cloud ledgers so transactions feed through rather than being imported by hand. Confirm the integration covers all the currencies you hold, since multi currency handling in the ledger is a separate question.
Materially better than a typical business bank's retail rate on major pairs, because it is quoted as interbank plus a stated markup. The gap narrows on thin currency pairs and small amounts, so test with your real volumes.
They are issued on the major networks and behave like ordinary company cards for most spend. Some merchants, particularly for deposits and car hire, treat prepaid style issuance differently, so do not assume parity with a bank credit card.

Softwr does not host reviews and shows no star rating for Airwallex, because a rating we did not collect is not ours to publish. What is here is the pricing and platform detail from the vendor’s own pages, limitations we could state concretely, and alternatives a reviewer confirmed people weigh against it.
