It descends from Peachtree in the United States and from Sage Line 50 in the United Kingdom, and those two lineages remain separate products with different tax handling, different report packs and different upgrade paths despite the shared name. It covers the nominal ledger, sales and purchase ledgers, bank reconciliation, VAT or sales tax, stock and job costing depending on edition, with an optional cloud sync and Microsoft 365 integration marketed under the Sage 50cloud name. The distinguishing property is where the data sits. The ledger is a file you can back up, copy, hand to an accountant on a memory stick and open without a subscription check on every launch, which is why it persists in businesses with poor connectivity, in regulated or cautious owners who will not put the books on someone else's server, and in trades with heavy stock or job costing where the desktop feature set is deeper than the cheap cloud alternatives. That same property is the constraint: file based multi user access needs everyone on the same local network or on a hosted desktop, and performance and file integrity degrade as the data file grows and the user count rises. Sage's investment is in Sage Business Cloud Accounting and Sage Intacct, remote and mobile working on Sage 50 is bolted on rather than native, and the eventual move to a browser product is a re-implementation rather than an upgrade. Anyone choosing it now should choose it because the local file and the desktop feature depth are worth more to them than the migration they are deferring.

Is Sage 50 cloud software?
No. The application runs on Windows and the ledger is a local file. The Sage 50cloud tiers add Microsoft 365 integration and a sync service for remote access, but the accounting itself is still desktop software.
Can my accountant work in it?
Yes, and many accountants in the United Kingdom and the United States know it well. Practically they will either take a backup of the company file, or connect through the remote data access service, or work on a hosted copy. Agree which of those before you start.
Does it still require an annual subscription?
Sage moved Sage 50 to subscription licensing, so continued access and tax table updates depend on an active subscription. Confirm what happens to your ability to open historical data if you stop paying.
Is the United Kingdom version the same product as the United States version?
No. They share a name and a heritage but they are different codebases with different tax handling. Buy the edition for the country where you file.
What about payroll?
Payroll is a separate Sage product with its own subscription and per employee cost. Budget for it separately rather than assuming the accounting subscription covers it.
How hard is it to move to a cloud system later?
Expect to convert opening balances and a limited window of transaction history rather than the full file, and to redo the chart of accounts, the customer and supplier records and any custom reports. Most businesses do it at a year end for that reason.
