What Samotics does

Samotics is a Dutch company whose SAM4 product monitors the condition of electrically driven rotating equipment by analysing current and voltage waveforms at the motor control centre. Rather than mounting a vibration sensor on the machine, it infers mechanical faults, bearing wear, misalignment, imbalance, cavitation, impeller damage, from distortions in the electrical signature that the load imposes on the motor. It also measures actual energy consumption and efficiency, which vibration systems cannot do. The distinguishing consequence is access. Submersible pumps, borehole pumps, assets inside ATEX zones, assets behind guarding, and assets on equipment that would need a shutdown to instrument are all reachable from the switchroom, where installation is an electrical job done at a convenient time. For water utilities and process plants with large populations of unreachable pumps, this is not a marginal improvement over vibration monitoring; it is the difference between monitoring the asset and not monitoring it. The energy efficiency output also gives the business case a second leg that pure reliability products lack. Buyers are water and wastewater utilities, chemicals, food and beverage, metals and mining operators. The trade-off is scope: SAM4 only sees things that reach the motor electrically, so it monitors the driven train but not un-driven assets, not process variables and not equipment on variable-speed drives without care, and each monitored motor needs hardware in the MCC. Pricing is per monitored asset on a subscription, quoted, with the sensor hardware and the electrical installation both real costs on top of the software.

Where it falls short

SAM4 only sees what reaches the motor electrically, so it covers the driven train and misses un-driven equipment, structures, process conditions and anything downstream of a mechanical decoupling.
Each monitored motor needs hardware installed in the motor control centre by a qualified electrician, and in older switchrooms that installation, including any required outage, can cost more than a year of the subscription.
Per-asset subscription pricing means the cost scales linearly with the number of motors, so a plant with a thousand small motors faces a bill that a fixed-price plant-wide vibration system would not impose.
Electrical signature analysis on variable-speed drives is harder than on direct-on-line motors, and results vary with drive type, so a heavily VSD estate should insist on a pilot on its own drives before committing.
Nothing is published on price, contract length or minimum deployment size, and the vendor sells multi-year subscriptions, so early exit terms are a negotiation you have to raise yourself.
