Overview
What Petasense does
Petasense makes wireless condition monitoring hardware and the ARO cloud platform, standing for Asset Reliability and Optimization. Its Vibration Mote measures triaxial vibration, temperature and speed; a Transmitter product line covers wired sensors, ultrasound, pressure, current and VFD-specific monitoring. ARO applies machine learning to produce asset health scores, detect developing faults and support reliability workflows across a plant's rotating equipment. The ownership change is the fact worth checking before signing. AssetWatch acquired Petasense in January 2024, and AssetWatch's own commercial model is monitoring delivered as a service, with its own condition monitoring engineers reviewing data and calling customers, rather than software sold to a plant that does its own analysis. Petasense continues to trade under its own name with its own product line, but a buyer choosing Petasense as self-service software should establish in writing which model they are buying, because the parent's economics favour the serviced one. Buyers are reliability and maintenance teams in chemicals, food and beverage, metals, paper and general manufacturing. The trade-off is the usual sensor-platform one, sharpened by scale: hardware is required per measurement point, the subscription is per asset, and a plant with a large population of small motors will find the arithmetic works against full coverage. Nothing is published on cost, and after the acquisition the pricing conversation may well be steered toward a service contract rather than a licence.

Where it falls short
Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Petasense.
- Petasense is now owned by AssetWatch, whose business is monitoring delivered as a managed service, so a buyer wanting self-service software should get the delivery model written into the contract rather than assume it.
- Hardware is required per measurement point and gateways are required per area, so the up-front capital for a plant-wide deployment is substantial and separate from the subscription.
- Per-asset subscription pricing scales linearly, which makes full coverage of a large population of low-value motors uneconomic compared with route-based monitoring.
- Nothing is published on sensor cost, subscription rate, gateway requirements or contract length, so a total cost of ownership figure requires a full sales engagement before you can compare it against anything.
- Battery-powered wireless sensors trade measurement richness for battery life, so the sampling rate and resolution are lower than a wired analyser would give, which limits diagnosis of high-frequency bearing defects on critical machines.
