EcoStruxure Geo SCADA Expert

Telemetry SCADA for geographically distributed water, oil and gas assets, formerly ClearSCADA

As of 1 September 2026, EcoStruxure Geo SCADA Expert's pricing is not published; the vendor quotes on request. The product sold for years as ClearSCADA is now EcoStruxure Geo SCADA Expert; the ClearSCADA name is retired and cannot be bought. Softwr lists it under Utilities. EcoStruxure Geo SCADA Expert is made by Schneider Electric, available on Windows, Web.

Overview

What EcoStruxure Geo SCADA Expert does

Geo SCADA Expert is Schneider Electric's SCADA product for distributed telemetry: water and wastewater networks, oil and gas gathering, pipelines and remote pumping and lift stations. It combines a historian, alarm management, redundant servers and a driver stack heavy on the protocols that dial-up, radio and cellular telemetry actually use, including DNP3 with its full outstation feature set, IEC 60870-5 and Modbus over unreliable transports. It was called ClearSCADA under Control Microsystems and then Schneider; that name is gone and searching for it will find historical documentation, not a current product. What distinguishes it from plant SCADA is the assumption that most sites are unreachable most of the time. Geo SCADA stores and forwards, reconciles time-stamped data from outstation logs after a link returns, and holds a database designed for tens of thousands of points spread across thousands of low-bandwidth sites. That is a different engineering problem from a factory with a fibre backbone, and it is why water utilities keep buying it despite Schneider's broader push toward the EcoStruxure brand. Buyers are water and wastewater utilities, midstream oil and gas operators, and their system integrators. The trade-off is the licensing model and the vendor relationship: servers are licensed in point bands starting around 250 points and scaling into the millions, ViewX desktop clients and Virtual ViewX web clients are licensed separately and in bundles, and nothing is published. Discounting is heavily dependent on existing entitlement, so an incumbent Geo SCADA customer and a new one can get very different numbers for the same configuration.

What people use it for

  • A water utility polling several thousand remote pump and lift stations over cellular and radio where outstation log backfill matters more than screen refresh rate
  • A midstream gas operator needing full DNP3 outstation support including unsolicited reporting and time-stamped event retrieval
  • Replacing an ageing ClearSCADA installation where the historical database and driver configuration can be carried forward rather than rebuilt
  • A regional wastewater authority consolidating several inherited SCADA systems onto one redundant server pair with browser clients for on-call staff

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about EcoStruxure Geo SCADA Expert.

  • The ClearSCADA name is retired, so the large body of documentation, forum answers and integrator experience under that name is increasingly stale and does not always match current behaviour.
  • Licensing is point-banded and client-counted with nothing published, and discount depends on your existing entitlement, so a first-time buyer negotiates from a weaker position than an incumbent renewing.
  • The free development mode is capped at 1,000 points and two hours of runtime, which is enough to prototype a screen but not enough to load-test a realistic network before you commit.
  • It is a Windows Server product; there is no Linux server option, so the operating system licensing, patching cadence and hardening burden come with the platform whether you want them or not.
  • Schneider has repeatedly rebranded and repositioned this line, from Control Microsystems to ClearSCADA to EcoStruxure Geo SCADA Expert, which makes long-horizon roadmap commitments hard to trust for a system a utility expects to run for fifteen years.

Each pairing was judged by two reviewers asking whether a buyer would genuinely weigh the two against each other. The ones that failed were deleted rather than published.

Answered, with sources

Questions people ask

Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

Can I still buy ClearSCADA?

No. The product is sold as EcoStruxure Geo SCADA Expert. ClearSCADA is a retired name and current quotes will use the new one.

How is the server licensed?

By point count, in bands starting around 250 points and scaling to over a million on a single server. Clients are licensed on top, individually or in bundles.

Is there a way to test it for free?

Yes, unlicensed development mode runs up to 1,000 points for two hours at a time. That is a prototyping tool, not a pilot.

Is Geo SCADA the same as AVEVA Plant SCADA?

No. Plant SCADA is the former Citect product for plant-floor supervisory control. Geo SCADA is the former ClearSCADA product for distributed telemetry. Different codebases, different problems.
