Motive

ELD compliance, AI dashcams and spend management for North American commercial fleets

As of 30 August 2026, Motive's pricing is not published; the vendor quotes on request. The company formerly called KeepTruckin, renamed in 2022, selling hardware led telematics with safety cameras and a fuel card alongside them. Softwr lists it under Fleet Management. Motive is made by Motive Technologies, available on Web, iOS, Android.

Overview

What Motive does

Motive supplies electronic logging devices, GPS tracking, AI facing and road facing dashcams, asset trackers and a fleet management application covering hours of service compliance, driver safety scoring, vehicle diagnostics, dispatch visibility and maintenance records. It also sells a spend management product with a fuel card, which puts fuel purchase data in the same system as the vehicle location that should corroborate it. The company rebranded from KeepTruckin in 2022, so older reviews, forum threads and integration documentation still carry the previous name. The differentiator is the camera and safety stack combined with that fuel card. Event detection runs on the device and flags following distance, distraction and unsafe manoeuvres, and the fuel card ties transactions to vehicle position, which is how fleets identify card misuse. For an operator whose insurance renewal or CSA scores are the pressing problem, that combination is the reason to choose Motive over a telematics vendor that only reports location. Buyers are North American trucking and construction fleets between roughly ten and several thousand vehicles that must run compliant electronic logs. The trade-off is contractual. Hardware is bundled into a multi-year per-vehicle agreement, cameras must be installed and calibrated, drivers frequently resist in-cab cameras, and the commitment is difficult to exit mid-term if the fleet shrinks.

What people use it for

  • A trucking fleet that must run FMCSA compliant electronic logs and wants cameras from the same vendor
  • An operator facing an insurance renewal that requires evidence of a driver coaching programme
  • A construction fleet tracking both vehicles and unpowered assets such as trailers and generators
  • A fleet suspecting fuel card misuse and wanting transactions matched against vehicle location

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Motive.

  • Contracts are multi-year and per vehicle with hardware embedded, so a fleet that shrinks keeps paying for units that are sitting in a yard.
  • Driver facing cameras generate real workforce resistance, and fleets in tight labour markets have lost drivers over the rollout rather than the technology.
  • Installation and calibration across a distributed fleet takes weeks of vehicle downtime, which is rarely costed into the comparison at the point of purchase.
  • The rebrand from KeepTruckin means older documentation, integration guides and third-party references are inconsistent, which slows technical work on connections.
  • Coverage depends on cellular networks, so remote route segments produce gaps in tracking and delayed log uploads that drivers then have to reconcile.

Answered, with sources

Questions people ask

Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

Is Motive the same company as KeepTruckin?

Yes. KeepTruckin renamed to Motive in 2022. The products and account relationships carried over.

Can hardware be bought outright?

It is normally supplied inside a multi-year subscription rather than sold, which is why the exit cost of a shrinking fleet is high.

Does it work outside the United States?

Canada and Mexico are supported, including Canadian electronic logging requirements. Coverage elsewhere is limited.

Are the driver facing cameras optional?

Yes, road facing only configurations are available, and fleets worried about driver retention often start there.
