What Lytx does
Lytx sells in-cab video devices with on-board machine vision, backed by a review operation and a coaching workflow. Cameras detect events such as harsh braking, following distance, distraction and rolling stops, upload clips, and feed a driver risk score. The platform also includes fleet tracking, DVIR and hours of service capability, though those are supporting features rather than the reason anyone signs. The distinguishing element is the review layer. Lytx has run a review operation for years in which trained people watch flagged clips and classify them, filtering the false positives that pure algorithmic scoring produces. That human step is why Lytx risk scores tend to be trusted in insurance conversations and in disciplinary processes where an automated score would be contested. It is also why Lytx costs more per vehicle than camera vendors that ship only algorithmic detection, and why event feedback arrives after a delay rather than instantly. Permira took a majority stake in 2020, which put the company on a private equity clock and coincided with expansion into broader fleet telematics. Fleets that buy the hardware and skip the coaching programme pay full price for a video archive nobody watches.

Can I run Lytx without a driver-facing camera?
Yes, road-facing only configurations are available and are what most fleets deploy first to reduce resistance. You lose distraction and seatbelt detection, which is a large part of the risk model.
Who watches the footage?
Flagged events go to Lytx reviewers, then to your safety managers. Continuous footage is not routinely watched; it is retained and pulled on request for incidents and claims.
Does it replace my telematics platform?
It can, but most large fleets keep their existing tracking platform and integrate Lytx for video and coaching. Budget for both if that is the plan.
