Predictive maintenance analytics for commercial vehicle fleets and heavy industrial assets

The short version

  • Each has a real cost: Motive contracts are multi-year and per vehicle with hardware embedded, so a fleet that shrinks keeps paying for units that are sitting in a yard.; Uptake bosch announced a planned acquisition in March 2026, so the roadmap and the pricing model beyond the current contract term are outside the seller's control; buyers should insist on contractual protection rather than verbal reassurance.
  • They diverge on capability: Motive covers ELD compliance, Uptake covers Fault code prioritisation.
  • Prices and features above were last checked on 1 September 2026.

What people use each for

The jobs each tool is most often brought in to do.

Motive

  • A trucking fleet that must run FMCSA compliant electronic logs and wants cameras from the same vendornot Uptake
  • An operator facing an insurance renewal that requires evidence of a driver coaching programmenot Uptake
  • A construction fleet tracking both vehicles and unpowered assets such as trailers and generatorsnot Uptake
  • A fleet suspecting fuel card misuse and wanting transactions matched against vehicle locationnot Uptake

Uptake

  • A long-haul carrier drowning in engine fault codes that needs the ten trucks worth acting on today rather than the four hundred codes loggednot Motive
  • A vehicle OEM wanting failure prediction on its own product without building a data science teamnot Motive
  • A mixed fleet running several telematics providers where the operator wants one health view instead of three vendor portalsnot Motive
  • A mining operation predicting haul truck component failures where an unplanned pit stoppage costs far more than the softwarenot Motive

Where each one falls short

Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.

Motive

  • Contracts are multi-year and per vehicle with hardware embedded, so a fleet that shrinks keeps paying for units that are sitting in a yard.
  • Driver facing cameras generate real workforce resistance, and fleets in tight labour markets have lost drivers over the rollout rather than the technology.
  • Installation and calibration across a distributed fleet takes weeks of vehicle downtime, which is rarely costed into the comparison at the point of purchase.
  • The rebrand from KeepTruckin means older documentation, integration guides and third-party references are inconsistent, which slows technical work on connections.
  • Coverage depends on cellular networks, so remote route segments produce gaps in tracking and delayed log uploads that drivers then have to reconcile.

Uptake

  • Bosch announced a planned acquisition in March 2026, so the roadmap and the pricing model beyond the current contract term are outside the seller's control; buyers should insist on contractual protection rather than verbal reassurance.
  • The company narrowed dramatically from its original industrial AI positioning, and non-fleet industrial customers are now clearly a secondary segment whose requirements will compete with vehicle priorities inside a much larger parent.
  • Predictions depend entirely on the telematics feed, so a fleet with cheap devices that expose limited fault codes gets weaker results and no amount of model quality compensates.
  • Pricing is per asset per month with a practical fleet minimum, which puts it out of reach for smaller operators who arguably have the least maintenance analytics capability of their own.
  • It recommends but does not execute: alerts still have to be turned into work orders in a separate maintenance system, so value depends on integration work and on shop discipline Uptake cannot enforce.

What is Motive best used for?
Motive is most often used for a trucking fleet that must run fmcsa compliant electronic logs and wants cameras from the same vendor, an operator facing an insurance renewal that requires evidence of a driver coaching programme, a construction fleet tracking both vehicles and unpowered assets such as trailers and generators, a fleet suspecting fuel card misuse and wanting transactions matched against vehicle location. Of those, a trucking fleet that must run fmcsa compliant electronic logs and wants cameras from the same vendor and an operator facing an insurance renewal that requires evidence of a driver coaching programme are not what Uptake is typically brought in for.

Answered from the vendors’ own pages

Motive: Is Motive the same company as KeepTruckin?

Yes. KeepTruckin renamed to Motive in 2022. The products and account relationships carried over.

Uptake: Is Uptake still trading?

Yes. It is operating and selling, with a Bosch acquisition announced in March 2026 and subject to regulatory approval.

Motive: Can hardware be bought outright?

It is normally supplied inside a multi-year subscription rather than sold, which is why the exit cost of a shrinking fleet is high.

Uptake: Do I need Uptake hardware?

No. It consumes data from existing telematics devices and OEM feeds; there is no Uptake sensor to buy.

Motive: Does it work outside the United States?

Canada and Mexico are supported, including Canadian electronic logging requirements. Coverage elsewhere is limited.

Uptake: Is Uptake still selling industrial asset performance management?

It retains the capability, but the commercial focus and the acquisition rationale are both fleet vehicles. Treat non-fleet roadmap commitments cautiously.

Motive: Are the driver facing cameras optional?

Yes, road facing only configurations are available, and fleets worried about driver retention often start there.

Uptake: How is it priced?

Per asset per month, quoted, with a practical minimum fleet size. Nothing is published.
