QuickBooks: Smart, simple online accounting software for small business

Merchant of record for digital products, so the platform is the legal seller and carries the sales tax registrations
As of 30 August 2026, Lemon Squeezy's pricing is not published; the vendor quotes on request. Lemon Squeezy sells your software on your behalf as the legal seller, which means it registers for and remits VAT, GST and US sales tax instead of you. Softwr lists it under Accounting.
Overview
Lemon Squeezy is a merchant of record service for people selling software, SaaS subscriptions, downloads and licence keys. It handles checkout, subscription billing, licence key issuance, affiliate payouts and customer receipts, and it is the entity named on the buyer's card statement and invoice. It was acquired by Stripe in 2024 and continues to run as a separate product. It is a browser product with a hosted checkout, a JavaScript overlay and a REST API; there is nothing to install. The distinguishing thing is legal rather than technical. Because Lemon Squeezy is the seller of record, the obligation to register for EU VAT, UK VAT, Australian and Canadian GST, Japanese consumption tax and the growing list of US states that tax digital goods sits with them, not with you. A one person software business selling into forty countries would otherwise have to monitor registration thresholds in each of them and file returns in several. That is the whole commercial argument, and it is why the fee is a percentage of revenue rather than a flat monthly charge: you are buying an indemnity and a filing operation, not a payment form. The buyer is typically an indie developer, a small SaaS team or a maker selling templates and plugins, someone for whom a tax adviser in six jurisdictions costs more than the fee. The trade off is margin and control. The percentage is materially higher than a direct gateway, it is charged on gross including the tax base in some configurations, and because the platform owns the customer relationship your invoices, refunds and chargebacks are theirs to administer. It is also not accounting software. Lemon Squeezy tells you what it collected and paid out; you still need a ledger to record revenue, fees and the payout timing difference, and the payout report is the only bridge between the two.
The honest half
Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Lemon Squeezy.
Cross-shopped
Each pairing was judged by two reviewers asking whether a buyer would genuinely weigh the two against each other. The ones that failed were deleted rather than published.

Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.
It means you do not have to register in the buyer's country for those digital sales, because Lemon Squeezy is the seller there. You still have your own home country obligations on the income you receive, and your accountant treats the payouts as your revenue less a cost of sale.
Stripe is a payment processor, so you remain the seller and the tax obligations are yours. Stripe Tax will calculate rates but does not register or file for you. Lemon Squeezy takes the seller position and the filings, which is why it costs more.
Yes, it continued to operate as a distinct product after the 2024 acquisition. As with any acquired product, treat long term roadmap commitments cautiously and keep your customer and subscription data exportable.
No. It is built for digital products, software, subscriptions and downloads. Physical fulfilment and the different tax treatment that comes with it are out of scope.
Card details are held by the merchant of record, not by you, so moving subscribers to another platform generally means asking existing customers to re-enter payment details rather than migrating tokens. Plan for churn at the switch.
The payout statements break out gross, tax, fees and refunds, which is enough for a competent bookkeeper. There is no direct posting into a general ledger, so expect a manual or scripted journal each month.

Softwr does not host reviews and shows no star rating for Lemon Squeezy, because a rating we did not collect is not ours to publish. What is here is the pricing and platform detail from the vendor’s own pages, limitations we could state concretely, and alternatives a reviewer confirmed people weigh against it.
