What Aras Innovator does

Aras Innovator is a product lifecycle management platform covering part and BOM management, change control, requirements, quality, supplier and component management, technical documentation and CAD data management. It runs on a model-based architecture in which the data model, workflows, forms and relationships are configured as metadata rather than compiled code, which is the technical reason Aras can promise that customisations survive upgrades. The commercial model is the thing worth understanding. Aras does not sell perpetual licences and does not price modules separately. One named-user subscription grants access to the whole application set, and Aras performs upgrades of the customer environment as part of that subscription rather than charging a project fee each time a new release lands. Competing PLM vendors typically quote a base platform, then add line items for quality, requirements, supplier collaboration and each CAD connector, and then quote an upgrade project every two or three years. Buyers who model total cost over five years, rather than year one, tend to find the gap narrows or reverses. Buyers are usually mid-size to large discrete manufacturers in aerospace, automotive, industrial equipment and medical devices, often ones that have tried a rigid PLM and want something they can reshape. The trade-off is that the flexibility is not free: Aras ships a platform and a set of applications, not a finished configured system, so an implementation is a genuine engineering project and you need people who can model business objects. Organisations wanting an out-of-the-box process to adopt as-is will find it underspecified.

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Aras Innovator.

Aras publishes no prices at all, so you cannot sanity-check a quote against a list price and every negotiation starts from the vendor knowing more than you do.
The platform ships as a toolkit rather than a configured process, so a first implementation is typically a six to twelve month engagement with an integrator, and services frequently cost more than the first two years of subscription.
The Community Edition is capped at 50 named users, gets only annual releases and excludes Aras-performed upgrades, so it is a genuine free tier but a deliberately awkward place to stay.
Configuration flexibility invites over-customisation; organisations that model every local exception end up with a system only two internal people understand, which is the same trap they left their previous PLM to escape.
CAD connectors are not all equal in maturity, and some are excluded from the base subscription, so a shop standardised on a less common CAD tool should confirm connector scope in writing before signing.

Can I buy a perpetual licence?

Do upgrades cost extra?
