Overview

What Seeq does

Seeq is analytics software for industrial time-series data. It connects to process historians such as AVEVA PI, Honeywell PHD, Aspen IP.21 and OSIsoft-era systems, plus SQL databases and cloud stores, and lets process and reliability engineers search, cleanse, contextualise and model that data in a browser. Seeq Workbench handles the analysis, Organizer builds recurring reports, and Data Lab exposes a Python environment for engineers who want to go further without exporting to a laptop. The distinguishing decision is that Seeq queries in place rather than ingesting. There is no data migration project, no second copy of plant history to govern, and adding Seeq does not change your historian licence. That is why it lands quickly in plants where a data lake project has stalled, and why it is often bought by an engineering function rather than by IT. It also means Seeq is only as good as the historian underneath it: poor tag naming and missing asset context in PI are inherited, not fixed. Buyers are process engineers and reliability teams in chemicals, pharmaceuticals, refining, mining, pulp and paper and utilities. The trade-off is the pricing model. Seeq is licensed per named user, and in a plant where a hundred engineers each want occasional access, per-user pricing becomes expensive fast; connectors to certain historians are also chargeable separately. Note that Seeq remains an independent private company headquartered in Seattle, most recently funded through a 2024 growth round led by Sixth Street; reports of a private equity buyout are not borne out by the company record, and a buyer relying on an ownership change to justify a discount should verify it first.

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Seeq.

  • Named-user pricing suits a small core team but scales badly: a site wanting a hundred engineers with occasional access pays for a hundred licences that mostly sit idle, which is why deployments often stay artificially narrow.
  • Seeq inherits whatever quality exists in the historian, so plants with unstructured tag names and no asset model spend real effort building asset trees in Seeq that should have been fixed upstream.
  • Certain historian connectors are charged separately, so the licence quote and the actual cost of connecting your specific data sources are two different numbers.
  • It is analysis, not control or action; findings still have to be carried into a CMMS or a control change by hand, so value depends on a workflow Seeq does not provide.
  • The product assumes competent process engineers. Organisations without that skill in-house get little from it, because Seeq deliberately does not ship prebuilt failure models the way condition monitoring vendors do.
