What IBM Maximo Application Suite does
IBM Maximo Application Suite, usually MAS, is the current form of the enterprise asset management product that ran for decades as standalone Maximo. It covers work order management, asset registers, preventive and condition-based maintenance, spare parts and inventory, procurement, scheduling and mobile field execution, with add-on applications for health, predictive maintenance, visual inspection, monitoring and asset investment planning. It runs on Red Hat OpenShift, whether you host it yourself or take it as a service from IBM. The fact that decides the cost is AppPoints, and it is nothing like the old per-seat model. MAS licenses a single pool of AppPoints that is consumed simultaneously by user access, by which applications you enable, and by how many environments you stand up. A user who only opens Manage consumes fewer points than one who touches Health, Predict and Monitor. Non-production environments consume from the same pool. The practical result is that organisations size their pool from headcount, which is the wrong input, and IBM licence reviews routinely find pools over-provisioned by a substantial margin because concurrency and application mix, not user count, are what actually drive consumption. Buyers are asset-intensive organisations: utilities, oil and gas, transport authorities, manufacturers, defence and large facilities estates. The trade-off is total cost and complexity. IBM publishes SaaS entry tiers, with the Essentials package for a small user population and a single production environment starting in the region of $3,150 per month, but implementation, data migration, customisation, OpenShift infrastructure and system integrator fees regularly multiply first-year spend two to three times over the licence. Maximo is the right answer for genuinely complex asset estates and a poor one for a plant that needs a work order system.
