What Guidewheel does

Guidewheel is a factory operations platform that starts by measuring electricity. A current transformer clamp is fitted around the power cable of a machine, a small gateway sends the readings to the cloud, and the platform interprets the load signature to determine whether the equipment is running, idling or stopped. From that stream it builds uptime, downtime, shift performance and alerting, with operator input layered on top to categorise stoppages and record scrap. The distinguishing fact is what it does not require. Every other approach to machine monitoring starts with the controller: an MTConnect adapter, an OPC UA server, a PLC tag map or a vendor specific protocol. A plant running equipment from the 1980s and 1990s, or a mixed floor of presses, ovens, extruders, compressors and washers from a dozen manufacturers, cannot take that path without retrofits that cost more than the monitoring. Guidewheel sidesteps it completely, because every powered machine draws current. Commercially that means a plant can instrument its whole floor in days rather than instrumenting the newest third of it over a year, and the coverage is what makes the data useful for scheduling and capacity arguments. Buyers are small and mid size plants across metal forming, plastics, food, textiles and general fabrication, usually paying per monitored machine per month. The trade off is inherent to the method. Current draw tells you the machine is working, not that it is making good parts. Cycle counting is reliable on equipment with a distinct load signature per cycle and unreliable on machines with flat, continuous draw, so part counts and quality still depend on operator entry or additional sensors.

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Guidewheel.

  • Current draw shows that a machine is consuming power, not that it is producing good parts, so scrap, rework and quality still require operator entry or additional sensors and the OEE quality factor is not measured automatically.
  • Cycle counting depends on a distinct load signature for each cycle, so machines with flat continuous draw such as ovens, some extruders and continuous mixers give poor or unusable part counts.
  • Installation involves fitting a clamp around a live power conductor inside or near an electrical panel, which in many plants requires a qualified electrician and a scheduled shutdown rather than a plug in setup.
  • It is monitoring, not execution, so there is no routing, scheduling, work order or traceability capability and it must sit alongside an ERP or MES rather than replacing either.
  • Pricing is per monitored machine, so a plant with two hundred small machines faces a bill proportional to machine count rather than to plant size, and the economics work better on fewer larger assets.

Yes. That is the reason it exists. It measures the power cable, so machine age and protocol are irrelevant.

Will it count parts?

Do I need IT involvement?
