RemNote

Note-taking where lines become spaced repetition flashcards as you write them

As of 30 August 2026, RemNote has a free plan and paid plans start at $8/month. An outliner in which notes and flashcards are the same document, so study material is produced while you take notes rather than copied out afterwards. Softwr lists it under Productivity.

Overview

What RemNote does

RemNote is a note-taking application in which notes and flashcards are the same document. Writing a line in a particular syntax turns it into a card, and a spaced repetition scheduler then presents it for review at increasing intervals. Around that sit PDF annotation where highlights become cards, image occlusion for diagrams, handwriting documents, and an exam scheduler. It runs in a browser, on the desktop and on mobile, with an offline mode. Notes, flashcards and synced devices are unlimited even without paying; the free plan meters three annotated PDFs, five image-occlusion images, one handwritten document, twenty file uploads a day at 8 MB each, and a hundred AI credits a month. What distinguishes it is the removal of the copying step. People who use a notes app alongside a separate flashcard system almost always stop, not because either tool fails but because maintaining two artefacts of the same material is where the practice dies. Generating the cards from the notes as you write is a small change with a large effect on whether anyone keeps doing it in week ten. That also makes it hard to leave in an unusual way: the notes are text and will export, but the scheduling state, meaning the record of what you know and when you next need to see it, is the accumulated asset and does not transfer into another system. It is used almost entirely by individuals: medical, law and language students, and self-directed learners, rather than by organisations. The trade-off is the pairing of a small vendor with a very long commitment. Someone using this properly is putting several years of study material and review history into a product from an independent company with no institutional customer base underwriting it, and the recurring complaint from long-term users is that very large knowledge bases slow down, which lands hardest on exactly the people who have invested most.

What people use it for

  • Medical or law study where the sheer volume of material makes maintaining a separate flashcard deck impractical.
  • Annotating lecture slides and textbook PDFs so that highlights become review material directly.
  • Learning anatomy or any diagram-heavy subject where image occlusion is the effective card type.
  • Language learning where vocabulary emerges from reading notes rather than from a prepared deck.

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about RemNote.

  • The free plan is unlimited on notes and flashcards but meters exactly what a student needs, at three annotated PDFs, five image-occlusion images and one handwritten document, so the trigger to pay arrives in the first week of a term rather than after a year.
  • Notes can be exported as text, but the review history and scheduling state cannot be carried into another spaced repetition system, and after a year of study that scheduling state is the real asset rather than the notes.
  • Knowledge bases built over several years slow the application down, and because the method depends on daily reviews, the performance problems arrive exactly when you have the most invested and the least appetite to move.
  • AI features are metered in credits at a hundred a month on the free plan, and the tier that makes them usable costs more than double the standard paid plan, so the AI is effectively a second purchase rather than a feature of the product.
  • It is a small independent vendor serving individual students, with no organisational sales underwriting it, so anyone committing several years of study material is betting on the company's continuity without an institutional customer base as a safety net.

Answered, with sources

Questions people ask

Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

How is it different from Anki?

Anki is a flashcard system you feed, free and open with an enormous library of shared decks and a long record of stability. RemNote generates the cards from notes you are already writing, which saves the copying step but ties the cards to one vendor.

Does it work offline?

An offline mode is offered. Sync conflicts across devices are the usual caveat, so test it with your own workflow before depending on it during an exam period.

What does the free plan actually restrict?

Not notes or flashcards, which are unlimited, and not the number of devices. It restricts annotated PDFs, image occlusion images, handwritten documents, daily uploads and AI credits.

Can I get my material out?

Notes export in text form. The scheduling state and review history do not transfer, so leaving means keeping your notes and restarting the review cycle from nothing.
