RescueTime: The closest comparison on automatic tracking, focused on attention and distraction reporting rather than turning a timeline into billable timesheets.

Automatic time tracking that never leaves your machine
As of 24 September 2026, Memtime starts at €10/month. Desktop app that records what you worked on minute by minute and stores it locally, so timesheets are reconstructed from memory rather than guessed. Softwr lists it under Productivity. Memtime is made by Memtime GmbH, launched in 2016, available on Windows, macOS, Linux.
Overview
Memtime records what you were doing on your computer all day and then lets you turn that record into timesheets. It runs in the background capturing the program and document in the foreground at five or six minute granularity, and presents the result as a timeline you scroll back through to rebuild a day you have already forgotten. The distinguishing decision is where the data lives. Everything is stored locally on the machine that recorded it and never reaches a server, which is why the product positions itself as "automatic time tracking built for privacy". That single choice separates it from most automatic trackers, which are sold to managers and centralise activity data for them. Memtime is sold to the person doing the work, and an employer cannot read the timeline from a console because there is no console. Because it watches the foreground window rather than asking you to start and stop a timer, there is nothing to forget. The timeline is raw material: you review it, drag the relevant stretches onto projects, and the timesheet comes out the other side. Phone call time can be captured too on higher tiers. Memtime GmbH is a German company founded in 2016. Plans run per user per month and fall with commitment length: Basic at €15 quarterly down to €10 on a two-year term, Connect at €22 to €15, and Premium at €30 to €20. The 100+ integrations with project software, including Jira, Asana and Harvest, start at Connect rather than Basic. Every tier has a 14 day trial with no card required.
The honest half
Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Memtime.
Cross-shopped
Each pairing was judged by two reviewers asking whether a buyer would genuinely weigh the two against each other. The ones that failed were deleted rather than published.

Timely: Also records activity automatically and drafts time entries from it, but stores the data in the cloud and gives managers a team view, which is the tradeoff Memtime refuses.

Toggl Track: Manual timers with a large integration surface and a genuine free tier, appropriate if you will actually remember to press start.

Harvest: Time tracking built around invoicing and client billing, stronger on getting paid and weaker on reconstructing what you did.

Capabilities
Automatic activity timeline
Records the program and document in the foreground at five or six minute granularity, with no timer to start or stop.
Local-only storage
Activity data stays on the device that recorded it and never reaches a server, so there is no console for anyone else to read it from.
Timesheet automation
Drag stretches of the timeline onto projects and the time entries are produced from the record rather than from recall.
Offline tracking
Keeps recording without a connection, which matters for anyone working on a train or at a client site.
100+ project software integrations
Syncs projects and entries with Jira, Asana, Harvest and others. Available from the Connect tier, not Basic.
Calendar integration
Pulls Google, Outlook, macOS and iCloud calendars into the same timeline as the activity record.
Phone call tracking
Captures call time through call system integrations, on the Premium tier.
Billability reporting
Custom reports over unlimited historical data, split by what is billable.

No. Activity is stored locally on the device that recorded it and never reaches a server, which is the basis of the product's "built for privacy" positioning and why no manager console exists.
SourcePer user per month, falling with commitment: Basic is €15 quarterly, €12 annual or €10 on two years. Connect is €22, €18 or €15. Premium is €30, €25 or €20. Enterprise is custom from 50 seats. Every tier has a 14 day trial with no card required.
SourceConnect and above. Basic covers automatic tracking, timesheets, calendars and reporting, but the 100+ project software integrations and the sync with them start at Connect.
