Overview

What Oracle MICROS Simphony does

Oracle MICROS Simphony is a cloud point of sale for enterprise food service, covering table service, quick service, bars, stadium concessions and hotel outlets. It handles menu and price management across estates, offline operation at the terminal, kitchen display, inventory and reporting, and it connects to Oracle Hospitality OPERA so that a guest can charge a restaurant bill to a room. The distinguishing capability is the estate. Simphony is built for organisations running hundreds of revenue centres across properties, with centralised menu hierarchies, complex tax and service charge handling by jurisdiction, and terminals that keep trading through a network failure. Oracle bought MICROS in 2014 for around 5.3 billion dollars, and the hotel and stadium install base that came with it is why the product remains the incumbent in those segments regardless of how cloud native competitors compare on user experience. Buyers are hotel groups, casinos, stadiums, cruise operators and large restaurant chains, usually purchasing through an Oracle reseller rather than direct. The trade off is cost structure and pace. Implementations run for months, the workstation hardware is proprietary and priced accordingly, configuration requires trained specialists, and support flows through Oracle service requests or the reseller rather than a chat window.

What people use it for

  • A hotel group that needs restaurant, bar and room service charges posting to the guest folio
  • A stadium or arena running dozens of concession stands under one menu and tax structure
  • A casino or resort with many outlets, complex comps and strict audit requirements
  • A large chain that requires terminals to keep trading and settling cards during a network outage

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Oracle MICROS Simphony.

  • The software subscription is a minor part of total cost; proprietary workstations, reseller implementation and configuration services usually dominate the first year budget.
  • Deployments are project work measured in months with specialist configuration, so a single site opening in six weeks cannot realistically be put on it.
  • Support runs through Oracle service requests or a reseller rather than direct chat, and resolution pace reflects enterprise support processes rather than restaurant urgency.
  • Hardware is proprietary and replacement units are priced at enterprise levels, so a broken terminal is not solved by buying a tablet locally.
  • The interface and administration tools are dense and dated compared with cloud native competitors, which lengthens training for high turnover front of house teams.

Answered, with sources

Questions people ask

Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

Is Simphony the same thing as MICROS?

Simphony is the cloud generation of the MICROS POS line. Oracle acquired MICROS Systems in 2014 and Simphony is the product it sells now.

Can it run offline?

Yes. Workstations continue taking and settling orders through a network outage, which is one of the main reasons large venues still choose it.

Do I buy it directly from Oracle?

Usually through an Oracle hospitality reseller, who also performs the implementation and often provides first line support.

Is it suitable for a single independent restaurant?

Rarely. The implementation cost and administration overhead only make sense at estate scale or where hotel property integration is required.
