Overview
What Greenphire does
Greenphire pays clinical trial participants. It automates stipends and expense reimbursement, issues the ClinCard physical or virtual debit card, supports direct to bank payment where regional rules allow, and handles tax reporting for participant income. Alongside participant payments it sells site payments, formerly eClinicalGPS, and budgeting and benchmarking, formerly EnvisiX, plus a travel and logistics service that books flights and accommodation for participants. The commercially important development is ownership. Suvoda acquired Greenphire and has completed a brand integration, folding the products onto the Suvoda platform with single sign on and a shared data layer, and retiring the standalone website. Buyers should expect to contract with Suvoda and to be sold randomisation and supply alongside payments; that is convenient if you want fewer vendors and a constraint if you have already chosen someone else for IRT. The buyers are sponsors and CROs, and the beneficiaries are sites, which is the awkward part of the economics. Sites carry the administrative pain of participant payments but do not choose the tool, so adoption depends on the sponsor mandating it. The trade-off is that payment operations bring genuine regulatory and tax complexity per country, and country coverage rather than features is usually what decides whether it works for a given trial.
What people use it for
- A global Phase III trial paying stipends across many countries where participants cannot practically be reimbursed by sponsor accounts payable
- A decentralised or hybrid trial where participants travel long distances and the sponsor funds flights and accommodation
- A trial in a population where slow reimbursement drives dropout and same day payment materially helps retention
- A sponsor that wants site payment milestones and participant payments handled by one vendor rather than two
The honest half
Where it falls short
Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Greenphire.
- The standalone greenphire.com site now redirects to Suvoda and the brands have been integrated, so buyers are contracting with a randomisation and supply vendor and should expect cross selling rather than an independent payments specialist.
- Nothing is published on price, and the typical shape of a platform fee plus per participant and per transaction charges means the cost of a trial is not knowable until enrolment is known.
- Payment method availability varies sharply by country, so a global protocol may end up with card payments in some regions and slow manual processes in others, which undermines the retention argument that justified the purchase.
- Sites bear the administrative work of enrolling participants and triggering payments but are not the buyer, so adoption depends on the sponsor mandating it and site resistance is a real implementation risk.
- Participant payments create tax reporting obligations that differ per jurisdiction, and the tooling helps but does not remove sponsor liability, so legal and finance review is required in every country the trial runs in.
