What LabWare does

LabWare is a laboratory information management system used across pharmaceutical, chemical, food, environmental, petrochemical and clinical laboratories. It manages sample registration through testing, results, approval and reporting, together with instrument integration, stability studies, and the audit trails that regulated laboratories are required to produce. It is the most widely deployed enterprise LIMS, and the reason is regulatory. In a pharmaceutical quality control laboratory, the software is part of what is inspected: electronic records and signatures must satisfy 21 CFR Part 11, changes must be traceable, and the system itself must be validated. LabWare has decades of accumulated practice in exactly that, and validation experience is not something a newer vendor can substitute for. The corresponding cost is that a LIMS implementation is one of the more demanding enterprise software projects. Laboratory workflows are specific, configuration is extensive, validation is mandatory and the whole exercise typically takes a year or more. That is the real subject of a LabWare evaluation, far more than the feature list.

Why is LabWare so dominant in pharma?

Validation experience. In a regulated laboratory the software forms part of what an inspector examines, and decades of accumulated validation practice is not something a newer vendor can substitute for.

How long is implementation?

A year or more for a regulated laboratory, including validation. Anyone quoting substantially less is either scoping narrowly or omitting validation.

Yes, LabWare offers ELN alongside LIMS on the same platform, which avoids the integration problem of running two vendors.

Is it suitable for a research lab?

Usually not. Research laboratories without regulatory obligations pay for compliance machinery they do not need, and Benchling or a lighter LIMS fits better.
