Overview
Benchling is a cloud research platform for life sciences, covering electronic laboratory notebook, molecular biology tools, sample and inventory tracking, and workflow management. It is built specifically for biotechnology research rather than adapted from regulated quality control software, and that origin is the whole difference. Molecular biology has its own objects: sequences, plasmids, constructs, cell lines, assay results. A scientist designing a CRISPR experiment works with sequence data directly, and a platform that treats a sequence as an attached file rather than as a first-class object forces the work back into desktop tools and spreadsheets. Benchling treats them properly, which is why it spread through biotech research organisations quickly and largely from the bench upward rather than from procurement downward. It has moved toward larger enterprise deployments and into regulated development work over time, but its centre of gravity remains research. Laboratories whose primary need is inspected quality control testing are still better served by a traditional LIMS, and the honest framing is that these serve adjacent rather than overlapping needs.

For qualifying academic use, yes, and that tier is genuinely usable rather than a trial. Commercial organisations are quoted.
Not in the regulated sense. It handles research sample tracking well, but laboratories needing inspected quality control testing should evaluate a traditional LIMS such as LabWare or STARLIMS.
It treats sequences, plasmids and constructs as first-class objects rather than attachments. Scientists adopted it at the bench, which is unusual for research software and is why it arrived without procurement driving it.
Not published, and reported as expensive. Budget for it as an enterprise platform rather than as a per-seat notebook.
Less well than biology. Chemistry-led organisations should evaluate it carefully against tools built for that discipline.
