Overview
Fujifilm Synapse is an enterprise medical imaging platform used by hospitals and imaging centres. The radiology PACS is the anchor, with Synapse VNA providing a vendor neutral archive for non DICOM and departmental image types, Synapse Cardiovascular covering cath lab, echo and vascular, Synapse 3D providing server side advanced visualisation, and Synapse Mobility providing browser and mobile image access for referring clinicians. Fujifilm sells the platform independently of imaging hardware, which is why it appears in competitive PACS replacements at sites that run GE, Siemens or Canon scanners. What distinguishes Synapse commercially is that Fujifilm is not trying to sell you scanners at the same time. A PACS bought from a modality vendor is normally negotiated inside a capital equipment deal, and the informatics price is a function of the hardware discount. Fujifilm competes on the informatics itself, which gives a site running mixed modality brands a genuinely vendor neutral archive and a cleaner negotiation. The cost of that independence is that Synapse has less privileged access to proprietary modality data than a Philips or Siemens stack has on its own equipment. Buyers are hospitals, health systems and outpatient imaging chains, and the trade off is modularity. Because PACS, VNA, cardiology and 3D are separately licensed and separately versioned, a health system running all four is managing four upgrade paths and four support relationships under one brand. That is a real operational load, and it is the most common complaint from sites two years into a Synapse enterprise deployment.
