What Sectra does
Sectra is a Linkoping based medical imaging IT vendor whose core product is Sectra IDS7, the radiology reading workstation, sitting on the Sectra enterprise imaging platform with a vendor neutral archive, the UniView zero footprint viewer for clinicians and the Image Exchange Portal for sharing studies between organisations. The same platform carries breast imaging, cardiology, ophthalmology, orthopaedics and digital pathology modules rather than separate acquired products bolted together. The commercially distinguishing point is the digital pathology module. Sectra was early to ship pathology on the same archive and workflow engine as radiology, which matters because a hospital digitising histopathology otherwise buys a second archive, a second integration project and a second support contract. Sectra One Cloud shifts the whole thing to a subscription with the vendor operating the infrastructure, which changes the purchase from a capital project with a five year refresh to an operating expense with an annual study volume commitment. That commitment is the number to negotiate, because imaging volumes grow and overage terms are where the cost surprise lives. Buyers are hospital groups, national and regional health services and large private imaging providers, particularly in the Nordics, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and increasingly the United States. The trade off is that Sectra is an imaging IT company rather than a modality manufacturer, so it does not bundle scanners and cannot discount software against hardware the way a Siemens or GE can. It also does not build its own diagnostic AI; it sells Sectra Amplifier as a marketplace to run third party algorithms, which means the AI you actually want still has to be licensed and validated separately.

- Sectra does not make scanners, so it cannot cross-subsidise software against modality hardware the way an integrated manufacturer can, and it often loses on headline price in a bundled tender.
- Diagnostic AI is not built in house; Amplifier orchestrates third party algorithms, so the algorithms themselves need separate licences, separate clinical validation and separate information governance sign off.
- Sectra One Cloud is priced against a committed annual study volume, and organisations whose imaging activity grows faster than forecast meet overage charges partway through the term.
- The pathology module assumes you have already solved slide scanning and laboratory workflow, which is the larger and more expensive part of digitising histopathology and is not in Sectra scope.
- Depth of Epic and Oracle Health integration varies by region and by which modules you buy, so a reference site in Sweden is a weak predictor of what integration will cost a United States buyer.
