Overview

What Bonterra does

Bonterra was formed in 2022 when Apax-backed Social Solutions, EveryAction, CyberGrants and Network for Good were merged under one brand. What you actually buy is one of three lines: Bonterra Fundraising and Engagement, built on EveryAction and Salsa; Bonterra Case Management, built on Social Solutions Apricot and ETO; and Bonterra Corporate Social Responsibility, built on CyberGrants for corporate grantmaking, employee giving and volunteering. The thing a buyer needs to understand is that these are still separate codebases with separate roadmaps, separate support queues and separate contracts. Bonterra markets integration between them, but a nonprofit buying case management and fundraising together is buying two products with a data connector, not one system. Roadmap risk is the direct consequence of the roll-up: legacy products such as ETO and older Salsa modules have been in maintenance while investment goes to the flagship, and customers on those products have limited leverage because the alternatives inside the portfolio were also acquired. Buyers split cleanly. Human services agencies buy Case Management because Apricot handles participant outcomes and funder reporting that a donor CRM cannot. Advocacy-heavy nonprofits buy Fundraising and Engagement for its distributed organising and email volume. Large corporates buy CSR because CyberGrants remains one of the few platforms that handles global grant disbursement and employee match at scale. Almost nobody buys all three, and the pitch that you should is where deals go wrong.

What people use it for

  • A human services agency that must report participant outcomes to a government funder and cannot do it in a donor CRM
  • A national advocacy organisation needing high-volume email, action alerts and distributed organising in one donor record
  • A large employer running a global employee match and grant disbursement programme across many countries
  • A nonprofit consolidating a legacy Salsa or ETO deployment onto a supported product within the same vendor

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Bonterra.

  • The three lines are separately acquired codebases, so buying two of them gives you two logins, two support queues and a connector rather than one system.
  • Legacy products absorbed in the roll-up, notably ETO and older Salsa modules, receive limited development while investment goes to flagship products, leaving those customers on a slowly ageing platform.
  • No pricing is published for any line, and quotes vary widely by contact count and negotiation, so benchmarking against competitors requires a full sales cycle.
  • Private equity ownership has produced repeated renewal price increases reported by customers, and the portfolio structure reduces the credibility of threatening to switch since several obvious alternatives are also Bonterra products.
  • Implementation for Case Management is a configuration project measured in months, and agencies routinely underestimate the internal staff time required to define forms and outcome measures.

Each pairing was judged by two reviewers asking whether a buyer would genuinely weigh the two against each other. The ones that failed were deleted rather than published.

Answered, with sources

Questions people ask

Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

Is Bonterra a single product?

No. It is three product lines built from separately acquired software. You buy one of them, and integration between them is a connector rather than a shared database.

What happened to EveryAction and Apricot?

They still exist as the underlying products, rebranded as Bonterra Fundraising and Engagement and Bonterra Case Management respectively.

Does Bonterra publish pricing?

No line has published pricing. Fundraising is generally priced by contact record count, case management by seats and programmes.

Should a small nonprofit consider Bonterra?

Rarely. The entry price and implementation effort suit organisations with dedicated operations staff; smaller charities are better served by a single-product CRM.

Softwr does not host reviews and shows no star rating for Bonterra, because a rating we did not collect is not ours to publish. What is here is the pricing and platform detail from the vendor’s own pages, limitations we could state concretely, and alternatives a reviewer confirmed people weigh against it.
