Sight Machine
Manufacturing
Enterprise manufacturing data platform that builds a plant data model rather than a dashboard

The short version
- Each has a real cost: PTC Windchill no pricing is published at any tier, and per-user rates are heavily negotiable on multi-year commitments, so the first quote a buyer receives is rarely the achievable price and small buyers without volume have little leverage.; Sight Machine onboarding is a data engineering project measured in months per plant, so value arrives long after the contract starts and the internal sponsor needs the patience and budget to survive that gap.
- They diverge on capability: PTC Windchill covers Part and BOM management, Sight Machine covers Unified plant data model.
- Prices and features above were last checked on 31 August 2026.

Where each one falls short
Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.
PTC Windchill
- No pricing is published at any tier, and per-user rates are heavily negotiable on multi-year commitments, so the first quote a buyer receives is rarely the achievable price and small buyers without volume have little leverage.
- Implementation dominates cost: data migration, configuration and training routinely account for the majority of three-year total cost of ownership, and large programmes run into seven figures of services.
- Annual support and maintenance is charged as a percentage of licence value in the low-to-mid teens, so the bill continues indefinitely even in years when nothing is upgraded.
- Upgrades between major releases are projects rather than updates, particularly where the deployment has been customised, and heavily customised sites often sit several versions behind.
- The role-based licence tiers mean occasional participants such as purchasing or quality still consume paid seats unless you deploy Windchill Navigate, which is a further product to buy and configure.
Sight Machine
- Onboarding is a data engineering project measured in months per plant, so value arrives long after the contract starts and the internal sponsor needs the patience and budget to survive that gap.
- It assumes the instrumentation already exists, so a plant whose machines produce no usable data gets nothing from a data platform and needs to solve connectivity first with a different class of product.
- Pricing scales with plants and data volume and is never published, which puts it out of reach for single site manufacturers regardless of how relevant the capability sounds.
- It is not an MES and does not control or execute anything, so it sits on top of the operational systems and adds a layer to maintain rather than replacing one.
- Success depends on a central team that owns definitions and enforces them, and in groups where plants retain autonomy the standardisation the platform provides gets quietly ignored at site level.

Questions people ask
- Is PTC Windchill or Sight Machine better?
- Neither clearly leads. PTC Windchill starts at On request and Sight Machine at On request, and user ratings are close enough to be indistinguishable. Choose on capability and platform support.
- Which is cheaper, PTC Windchill or Sight Machine?
- PTC Windchill starts at On request and Sight Machine at On request.
- Does PTC Windchill or Sight Machine run on more platforms?
- PTC Windchill runs on Web, Windows, On-premise, Cloud, API. Sight Machine runs on Web, API.
- What is PTC Windchill best used for?
- PTC Windchill is most often used for a medical device manufacturer needing a design history file and audit-ready change control for fda and mdr submissions, an aerospace supplier reconciling engineering and plant-specific manufacturing boms across multiple factories, an industrial equipment firm managing configurable product families where every unit shipped has a different option set, a company standardising on creo that wants cad data management and plm from one vendor rather than two. Of those, a medical device manufacturer needing a design history file and audit-ready change control for fda and mdr submissions and an aerospace supplier reconciling engineering and plant-specific manufacturing boms across multiple factories are not what Sight Machine is typically brought in for.
- What can PTC Windchill do that Sight Machine cannot?
- PTC Windchill covers Part and BOM management, Change and configuration management, CAD data management, Variant and options management. Sight Machine covers Unified plant data model, Broad ingestion, Cross plant benchmarking, Root cause analysis.
Answered from the vendors’ own pages
PTC Windchill: Is a perpetual licence still available?
PTC has moved decisively to subscription and now positions Windchill as a subscription product. Existing perpetual estates are supported but new perpetual sales are not the default route and should not be assumed.
Sight Machine: Is this an OEE product?
It can produce OEE, but buying it for OEE alone is expensive. The reason to buy it is cross plant data standardisation.
PTC Windchill: How much does Windchill cost?
PTC publishes nothing. Expect role-tiered per-user subscription plus modules, plus support at a percentage of licence value, plus implementation services that usually exceed the software.
Sight Machine: Does it need a historian?
It reads from historians, control systems and MES. Some source of machine data is a prerequisite.
PTC Windchill: Does it require Creo?
No. Creo integration is deepest, but connectors exist for SolidWorks, NX, CATIA and Inventor. Mixed-CAD sites are common.
Sight Machine: How long does a plant take to onboard?
Plan in months per plant, depending on how many sources and how inconsistent the existing definitions are.
PTC Windchill: Is it overkill for a hundred-person hardware company?
Usually yes, unless you are in a regulated sector. Below that scale a cloud-native PLM will reach useful state in weeks rather than quarters.
Sight Machine: Who is the buyer?
A corporate manufacturing, quality or digital function. It is rarely a plant level purchase.
