Google Slides

Google's browser presentation editor, free with a Google account and included in every Workspace edition

As of 30 August 2026, Google Slides has a free plan and paid plans start at €4.76/month. A presentation tool where the deck is a link rather than a file, several people edit at once and every change is versioned. Softwr lists it under Productivity.

Overview

What Google Slides does

Google Slides is Google's browser-based presentation editor. It is free with a personal Google account and included in every Google Workspace edition. Decks live in Drive, several people can edit the same one simultaneously, comments and suggestions attach to slides, and every change is versioned and restorable. It imports and exports PowerPoint files, offers presenter view with speaker notes and an audience question feature, links charts from Sheets so they update when the source data changes, and works offline in Chrome provided the deck was marked for offline use beforehand. There are Android and iOS apps. What distinguishes it is the absence of a file. There is no attachment to email, no reconciling two people's edits, and no version named final-v7-actual, because the link is the deck. Commercially its position is even simpler: it costs nothing and is already there for anyone with a Google account, so in organisations on Workspace and across education it wins without a purchase decision ever being made. The question is never whether to buy it, only whether its ceiling matters for the work in front of you. It is used by education, startups, and anyone on Workspace producing internal decks. The trade-off appears at two edges. Typography is limited to the fonts Google hosts, so a brand's licensed typeface cannot be installed, and animation, master slide control and image handling sit behind PowerPoint and Keynote. Conversion in either direction loses something, so a deck destined for a client's PowerPoint needs checking slide by slide. And the governance features an organisation eventually needs, meaning retention and legal hold, data loss prevention and residency controls, belong to the higher Workspace editions, so the tool adopted because it was free carries an upgrade cost that appears only when someone asks a compliance question.

What people use it for

  • A deck several people must build at once before a deadline, where merging emailed versions would be the actual failure mode.
  • Recurring reports where the charts should update from a spreadsheet rather than being pasted in again each time.
  • Teaching and classroom use, where the tool is free and runs on inexpensive hardware.
  • Sharing a deck with people outside the organisation by link rather than as an attachment that immediately goes stale.

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Google Slides.

  • Fonts are limited to what Google hosts, so a brand's licensed typeface cannot be installed, and decks built to a corporate template either substitute a lookalike or lose the visual identity the template exists to enforce.
  • PowerPoint conversion is lossy in both directions, with animations, transitions, embedded video, diagrams and precise positioning all liable to shift, so a deck that must end up in a client's PowerPoint needs checking slide by slide and is often rebuilt.
  • Offline access has to be arranged before the connection is lost, so a deck not marked for offline use in advance is simply unavailable, which is a recurring failure on the way to present at a customer site.
  • Animation, master slide control, image editing and typographic precision sit behind PowerPoint and Keynote, so design-led work meets a ceiling that no add-on removes and the designers work elsewhere.
  • The governance features an organisation eventually needs, including retention and legal hold, data loss prevention and data residency controls, belong to higher Workspace editions, so a tool adopted because it was free carries an upgrade cost that surfaces only when compliance asks.

Answered, with sources

Questions people ask

Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

Is Google Slides free?

Yes, with a personal Google account and no time limit or feature gate on the editor. What costs money is Workspace, which adds storage, administration and the governance controls.

Can I open and edit PowerPoint files?

Yes, and .pptx files can be edited directly in Drive. Complex decks lose animations, effects and exact positioning in the conversion, so check anything that came from a designer.

Does it work offline?

Yes in Chrome, but only if the file was made available offline beforehand. It cannot be arranged after you have lost the connection, which is when people usually try.

Is it good enough for a client-facing deck?

For a standard business deck, yes. For a design-led deck using brand typefaces and animation it will hold you back, and the export to PowerPoint will not be clean.
