WPS Office

Office suite from Kingsoft with Microsoft file compatibility, including maintained Linux builds

As of 30 August 2026, WPS Office is free to use. A word processor, spreadsheet, presentation tool and PDF editor in one application, free with adverts and 1 GB of cloud storage. Softwr lists it under Productivity.

Overview

What WPS Office does

WPS Office is an office suite from Kingsoft Office, a Chinese software company whose WPS product line has existed since the late 1980s. It bundles Writer, Spreadsheet, Presentation and a PDF tool into a single tabbed application, reading and writing Microsoft's DOC, DOCX, XLS, XLSX, PPT and PPTX formats natively as well as OpenDocument. Builds exist for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS and the browser. The free tier is not time-limited: it gives you the editors, 1 GB of cloud storage and a PDF reader, funded by adverts. Paid plans remove the adverts, raise storage to 20 GB and unlock PDF editing, conversion to Office formats, text recognition, electronic signature and the AI tools. What distinguishes it is where it runs and how well it reads other people's files. On Linux it is the most usable full office suite available, and it opens complex Microsoft documents closer to the original than the free alternatives typically manage. Commercially that matters because it changes the shape of the bill: a single annual payment of roughly the cost of two months of a Microsoft 365 seat, rather than a per-user subscription with a term commitment. For a household, a student or a small business that needs documents and PDF editing and nothing else, that arithmetic is decisive. It is bought by individuals, students, small businesses in cost-sensitive markets, Linux desktop users, and anyone who needs to edit PDFs without buying Acrobat. The trade-off is not technical. It is a Chinese vendor whose cloud sync stores documents on its own infrastructure by default, and that is a procurement blocker in government, defence and many regulated European and American organisations regardless of how the software performs. There is also no tenant administration to speak of, so it does not scale into managed IT: each installation is looked after on the machine it sits on.

What people use it for

  • A Linux desktop where the free alternatives keep breaking the layout of colleagues' DOCX and PPTX files.
  • A small business that edits and converts PDFs regularly and does not want an Acrobat subscription for each person.
  • Students and home users who need Microsoft-compatible documents without a Microsoft 365 subscription.
  • Older or low-specification Windows machines where the full Microsoft suite is slow to install and slow to run.

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about WPS Office.

  • The free tier is funded by advertising, and the adverts and upgrade prompts appear inside the editing window rather than on a website, so the cost of not paying is charged in interruptions while you work.
  • Kingsoft is a Chinese company and cloud sync stores documents on its infrastructure by default, which is a procurement blocker for government, defence and many regulated buyers no matter how well the software performs.
  • Complex Microsoft files still drift, so heavily formatted documents with tracked changes, PowerPoint animations and workbooks using recent functions or VBA macros can open with differences that only become visible when the file goes back to a Microsoft user.
  • There is no tenant administration, so an organisation has no central console for licences, policy, retention or offboarding, and every installation has to be managed on the individual machine.
  • Cloud storage stops at 1 GB free and 20 GB per user when paid, so it works as sync for documents and stops being viable for anyone handling media, scans or large PDF archives.

Answered, with sources

Questions people ask

Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

Will it open and save Microsoft Office files properly?

It reads and writes DOCX, XLSX and PPTX natively and ordinary documents round-trip cleanly. Files with macros, tracked changes or complex animation can differ, so check anything going back to a Microsoft user.

Is the free version genuinely free?

Yes, and it is not time-limited. It shows adverts, caps cloud storage at 1 GB, and holds back PDF editing and conversion, text recognition and electronic signature for the paid plan.

Does it run on Linux?

Yes, with maintained desktop builds, which is unusual for a commercial office suite. The Linux version can trail Windows on newer features.

Is it suitable for a regulated organisation?

Usually not without a review. The vendor is Chinese, cloud sync is on by default, and there is no administrative or compliance tooling of the kind a regulated buyer will be asked to evidence.
