What COPA-DATA zenon does

zenon is COPA-DATA's software platform for machine HMI, plant SCADA and energy automation. It covers visualisation, alarming, historian, reporting, batch control to ISA-88, and a soft PLC (zenon Logic) based on IEC 61131-3. It is used heavily in automotive, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals and, distinctively, in electrical substations, where it speaks IEC 61850, IEC 60870 and DNP3 natively rather than through add-on drivers. The distinguishing commercial fact is the licensing unit. zenon licences are sized by I/O count, and the count is not a simple tally of variables: numeric values are weighted, typically multiplied, when calculating the licensed I/O figure, while binary values count singly. How is a zenon licence sized?

Is zenon only for factories?

No. A significant part of its installed base is electrical substation automation, where IEC 61850 support is native rather than an add-on.

Is there a free version?

Can zenon replace a PLC?
