COPA-DATA zenonvs
Ignition

Ignition: Ignition licenses per server with unlimited tags, which is cheaper at high I/O counts and has a far larger integrator pool outside Europe.

HMI, SCADA and energy automation platform licensed by I/O tag count
As of 1 September 2026, COPA-DATA zenon's pricing is not published; the vendor quotes on request. zenon is an Austrian HMI and SCADA platform that is unusually strong in pharmaceutical validation and IEC 61850 substation automation. Softwr lists it under Manufacturing. COPA-DATA zenon is made by COPA-DATA, available on Windows, Linux, Web.
Overview
zenon is COPA-DATA's software platform for machine HMI, plant SCADA and energy automation. It covers visualisation, alarming, historian, reporting, batch control to ISA-88, and a soft PLC (zenon Logic) based on IEC 61131-3. It is used heavily in automotive, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals and, distinctively, in electrical substations, where it speaks IEC 61850, IEC 60870 and DNP3 natively rather than through add-on drivers. The distinguishing commercial fact is the licensing unit. zenon licences are sized by I/O count, and the count is not a simple tally of variables: numeric values are weighted, typically multiplied, when calculating the licensed I/O figure, while binary values count singly. A project a buyer sizes at 5,000 variables can therefore land in a licence band far above 5,000 I/Os. Sizing this wrongly at quote stage is the single most common cause of a zenon budget overrun, and it is documented in the licensing manual rather than on the product page. Buyers are machine builders, pharmaceutical plants that need GAMP 5 and 21 CFR Part 11 support out of the box, and utilities automating substations. The trade-off is ecosystem size: COPA-DATA is a mid-sized independent Austrian firm, so the integrator pool outside German-speaking Europe is thin, English-language community resources are limited compared with Ignition or Rockwell, and hiring a zenon engineer in North America or Asia is materially harder than hiring for the major platforms.
The honest half
Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about COPA-DATA zenon.
Cross-shopped
Each pairing was judged by two reviewers asking whether a buyer would genuinely weigh the two against each other. The ones that failed were deleted rather than published.

Rockwell FactoryTalk: If your controllers are Allen-Bradley, FactoryTalk removes the driver layer and gives you native tag browsing that zenon cannot match.

Schneider Electric EcoStruxure: For substation and electrical distribution work in an estate already running Schneider switchgear, EcoStruxure keeps the electrical and SCADA layers with one supplier.

By calculated I/O count. Numeric variables are weighted upward in that calculation and binary values counted singly, so ask your partner for the calculated figure, not the variable count, before signing.
No. A significant part of its installed base is electrical substation automation, where IEC 61850 support is native rather than an add-on.
There is a demo mode for evaluation and a free educational licence, but production runtime always needs a paid, I/O-banded licence.
zenon Logic is an IEC 61131-3 soft PLC and can control non-safety-critical processes, but most deployments keep a hardware PLC and use zenon for visualisation and supervision.

Softwr does not host reviews and shows no star rating for COPA-DATA zenon, because a rating we did not collect is not ours to publish. What is here is the pricing and platform detail from the vendor’s own pages, limitations we could state concretely, and alternatives a reviewer confirmed people weigh against it.
