Chameleon

In-product tours, tooltips and surveys that a product team can build without engineering

As of 31 August 2026, Chameleon starts at $279/month. Chameleon builds onboarding tours, tooltips, microsurveys and launchers into an existing web app through a JavaScript snippet. Softwr lists it under Customer Success. Chameleon is available on Web.

Overview

What Chameleon does

Chameleon is a product adoption tool. Once its snippet is installed, a product manager can build guided tours, tooltips, modals, checklists, banners, in-app surveys and a HelpBar command palette against real elements in the application, target them by user attributes or behaviour, and publish without a deploy. Content styling is unusually configurable, which is why it appears in products where a generic-looking overlay would look wrong. The distinguishing feature is depth of targeting and styling rather than breadth of platform. Chameleon deliberately does not try to be an analytics suite; it expects you to have Amplitude, Mixpanel or Segment already and to feed it audience definitions from them. That focus makes it a better fit alongside an existing data stack and a worse fit if you wanted one vendor for both behaviour analysis and in-app guidance. Buyers are B2B SaaS product teams with a defined onboarding problem. The trade offs are cost and scope. Billing is by monthly tracked users, defined as uniquely identified profiles seen in the previous 30 days, so a product with many low-value logins pays for them. The Pro tier caps live experiences at 20, HelpBar and the Ranger agent are held back for Growth at $1,250 a month, and there is no mobile SDK, so a company with a significant mobile app will need a second tool for it.

What people use it for

  • A B2B SaaS product where new accounts stall before reaching the action that predicts retention, and you need a guided path to it
  • Announcing and driving adoption of a new feature to a specific segment without shipping a release
  • Collecting targeted in-product feedback from users who just completed a workflow, rather than by email
  • Reducing support tickets by putting contextual help and a searchable command bar inside the product

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Chameleon.

  • The entry price is high for the category: $279 a month at 2,000 tracked users and $750 at 5,000 on Pro, so a product with a large free tier is paying substantially for users who may never convert.
  • Billing is by monthly tracked users, counting any uniquely identified profile seen in 30 days, which means seasonal or occasional-login products pay for people who log in twice a month.
  • Pro caps live experiences at 20, and mature onboarding programmes exceed that quickly, so the practical plan for a serious deployment is Growth at $1,250 a month on annual billing.
  • There is no mobile SDK, so a company with an iOS or Android app alongside its web product needs a second onboarding tool and a second set of content.
  • It is not an analytics product, so audience definitions depend on a working Segment, Amplitude or Mixpanel integration; if your event tracking is unreliable, your targeting will be too, and the tool will get the blame.

Answered, with sources

Questions people ask

Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

What is a monthly tracked user?

A uniquely identified user profile sent to Chameleon within the previous 30 days. Anonymous visitors you never identify do not count, but any logged-in user does.

Does Chameleon work on mobile apps?

No. It is a web tool delivered by a JavaScript snippet. Native mobile onboarding requires a different product.

Do I need engineering to use it?

Only for the initial snippet installation and for identifying users with the properties you want to target. After that, building experiences is no-code.

Was Chameleon at trychameleon.com?

Yes, and that domain now redirects to chameleon.io. It is the same product, not a rebrand of substance.
