Overview

What Bonfire does

Bonfire is a strategic sourcing platform used by public agencies, higher education and healthcare to run request for proposal processes: publishing solicitations, managing supplier questions and addenda, receiving sealed submissions, and running structured evaluations across a scoring committee. It was founded in Kitchener, Ontario and sells across Canada and the United States. The part of the process it treats as the product is evaluation, and that is the correct emphasis. Posting a solicitation is easy and half a dozen products do it. What creates legal exposure is the award: a losing bidder protests, and the agency has to demonstrate that every evaluator scored against published criteria, that scores were not changed after discussion without a record, and that the weighting applied was the weighting advertised. Bonfire keeps evaluators in separate scoring workspaces, records score changes with time stamps, and produces the evaluation record as an artefact. An agency that runs the same process in spreadsheets and email has the same decision with none of the evidence. Ownership is the fact a buyer most needs and is least likely to be told. Bonfire was acquired by GTY Technology Holdings in 2019. GTY was taken private by GI Partners in 2022 and its portfolio rebranded as Euna Solutions in 2023, so Bonfire is now sold as part of Euna's procurement line alongside other former GTY products. An agency shortlisting Bonfire against another Euna product is running a competition between two divisions of one company, and pricing behaves accordingly. As with every public procurement, the executed contracts are public records, so the honest way to price this is to read three comparable agencies' awards before the first sales call.

What people use it for

  • An agency that has lost or nearly lost a bid protest and needs a defensible evaluation record
  • A procurement team running scoring committees currently held together by spreadsheets and email
  • A university or health system applying public procurement rules without a public procurement system
  • An agency wanting suppliers to self register and receive addenda automatically rather than by mailing list

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Bonfire.

  • It is a sourcing and evaluation tool rather than full procure to pay, so requisitions, purchase orders and invoicing stay in the finance system and the join between them is the agency's problem.
  • Since the acquisition path from GTY to GI Partners to Euna Solutions, Bonfire sits in a portfolio alongside products it once competed with, which narrows a shortlist that appears independent.
  • Suppliers must register on the portal to bid, and small local vendors reliably complain about the extra account, which can reduce responses on low value solicitations.
  • Pricing is quoted rather than published and scales with solicitation volume, so an agency with a few very large procurements pays a model designed around throughput.
  • Contract management after award is thin compared with dedicated contract lifecycle products, so agencies often buy a second system for the obligations the award created.

Questions people ask

Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

Can we see what other agencies pay?

Yes. These contracts are public records. Read several comparable awards before negotiating.
