As of 31 August 2026, Terra is free to use. A workspace for running genomic workflows and notebooks on Google Cloud or Azure, built by the Broad Institute with Verily and Microsoft. Softwr lists it under Research. Terra is made by Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, with Verily and Microsoft, available on Web, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure.
Overview
Terra provides shared workspaces containing data, WDL workflows, Jupyter and RStudio environments, and access controls, running directly on Google Cloud or Microsoft Azure. It is the platform behind a large number of controlled-access biomedical datasets, and it is how many researchers reach All of Us, the Genomic Data Commons and similar resources without moving petabytes to a local cluster. The pricing model is the thing to understand. Terra charges nothing for the platform, its administration, its security controls or frontline support. Every cost on your invoice is Google Cloud or Azure charge, passed through a Terra billing project at cost. A running virtual machine costs roughly 0.22 dollars an hour and about 0.027 dollars an hour when paused, and storage accrues continuously whether anyone is analysing anything or not. The failure mode is not licence cost, it is a forgotten running notebook and intermediate workflow outputs nobody deleted. Buyers are academic labs, consortium projects, health systems and biotech computational teams, particularly those working with controlled-access human genomic data. Terra can sign HIPAA business associate agreements and GDPR data processing agreements, and its Azure deployment carries FedRAMP Moderate authorisation. The trade off is that you are responsible for cloud cost governance, and the platform expects real bioinformatics competence.
