CropX: If you want a soil probe that comes with an irrigation recommendation engine rather than raw measurement

Research-grade soil, plant and atmosphere sensors with the ZENTRA Cloud data platform
As of 1 September 2026, METER Group ZENTRA's pricing is not published; the vendor quotes on request. The sensor company research stations and serious agronomists buy when the number has to be defensible. Softwr lists it under Agriculture. METER Group ZENTRA is made by METER Group, available on Web, iOS, Android.
Overview
METER Group makes environmental measurement hardware with a reputation for accuracy that is unusual in agricultural sensing: TEROS soil moisture and temperature sensors, ATMOS weather stations, TEROS 21 water potential sensors, HYPROP and WP4C laboratory instruments, and the ZL6 family of data loggers. ZENTRA Cloud is the software layer that receives logger data over cellular, stores it, charts it, alerts on thresholds and exposes an API. It is the difference between a sensor network you have to visit with a laptop and one that tells you something. The reason METER wins where cheaper sensors lose is calibration and traceability. TEROS sensors are individually calibrated and the measurement physics is documented to a standard that survives peer review, which matters when the data supports a research publication, a regulatory submission, an irrigation district water accounting scheme or a legal dispute over drainage. Cheap capacitance probes will produce a number; they will not survive being questioned. That is also why METER hardware costs several times what commodity soil probes cost, and why buyers who only want to know roughly when to irrigate are overpaying. ZENTRA Cloud is sold per device on a pay for what you activate basis, and the ZL6 Pro ships with a three-year subscription included. That bundling is worth planning around: a research group buying loggers on a three-year grant gets cloud access for the life of the project and then faces a renewal decision with no funding attached, which is how long-running datasets go dark. The buyer is a university, a research station, an irrigation district, a high-value permanent crop operation or a consultancy. It is a poor fit for a farm that wants an irrigation app, because METER sells measurement, not recommendations.
The honest half
Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about METER Group ZENTRA.
Cross-shopped
Each pairing was judged by two reviewers asking whether a buyer would genuinely weigh the two against each other. The ones that failed were deleted rather than published.

Answered, with sources
Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.
A three-year subscription is included with the ZL6 Pro. Other loggers require a separate per-device subscription.
No. Cellular data is covered within the device subscription rather than billed as a separate SIM contract.
No. METER provides measurement, not scheduling recommendations. You either interpret the data yourself or feed it into a scheduling platform.
Individual sensor calibration and documented measurement physics, which is what makes the data hold up in research, regulatory and legal contexts.

Softwr does not host reviews and shows no star rating for METER Group ZENTRA, because a rating we did not collect is not ours to publish. What is here is the pricing and platform detail from the vendor’s own pages, limitations we could state concretely, and alternatives a reviewer confirmed people weigh against it.
