What Soil Scout does

Soil Scout makes fully buried wireless soil sensors that transmit through the soil itself to a pole or building-mounted base station, which then uploads to the Soil Scout Hub cloud dashboard. Each sensor measures volumetric water content, temperature and salinity. The engineering claim that matters is longevity and invisibility: the Hydra100 is rated for up to twenty years of buried operation and the Happi100 for up to ten, with nothing protruding above ground. A single base station covers up to a kilometre and can carry over a thousand sensors, and the sensors need no individual data plans because they reach the base station rather than a mobile network. That design is a direct answer to why soil sensor deployments fail. Conventional probes have an above-ground antenna or logger that gets hit by a mower, a boom, a plough or a spectator, or a battery that needs replacing on a schedule nobody keeps. Soil Scout removes all of those failure modes by making the sensor a sealed object below working depth. The cost is that you cannot service it: if a sensor is wrong or dies early, it is under the pitch or under the crop and the recovery is a spade. The buyer profile follows from that. Golf course superintendents, stadium and sports turf managers, and research or high-value agricultural sites where the ground is worked or trafficked and a surface installation would not survive. It is a measurement system rather than an irrigation controller, so it reports and alerts but does not open a valve, and integration with the irrigation control system is a separate exercise. No pricing is published anywhere, which is a genuine obstacle when the natural comparison is a commodity probe with a visible price tag.

  • Sensors are unserviceable once buried, so a failed or drifting unit means excavation and the confidence you place in a single reading has no easy verification.
  • No pricing is published at all, which makes it hard to justify against commodity probes that quote openly, and per-sensor cost is well above the alternatives.
  • It measures but does not control, so tying moisture readings to actual irrigation decisions requires either manual interpretation or a separate integration project with the control system.
  • Underground radio range depends on soil type and moisture; heavy wet clay attenuates the signal and can force more base stations than the headline kilometre figure suggests.
  • The company is small and Finland-based, so outside its established golf and sports turf distribution the support, spares and installation expertise depend entirely on whether a competent local distributor exists.
