Instinct Science

Veterinary EMR built for emergency and specialty hospitals, plus Plumbs drug reference

As of 31 August 2026, Instinct Science's pricing is not published; the vendor quotes on request. A veterinary practice management system designed around inpatient treatment sheets rather than the fifteen minute appointment, now sold alongside Plumbs, Clinicians Brief and an AI scribe. Softwr lists it under Veterinary. Instinct Science is made by Instinct Science, LLC, available on Web, iOS, Android.

Overview

What Instinct Science does

Instinct Science sells cloud veterinary practice management and clinical software. Instinct EMR is aimed at emergency, specialty and referral hospitals, with Instinct Treatment Plan providing digital treatment sheets for hospitalised patients, task assignment across shift changes and charge capture tied to treatments performed. A separate Instinct EMR for Primary Care targets general practice. The company also owns Plumbs, the veterinary drug reference with interaction checking, Clinicians Brief, and ScribbleVet, an AI clinical note scribe. The distinguishing design decision is the treatment sheet. Most veterinary practice management systems were built around appointment based general practice and treat hospitalisation as an afterthought, which means an ICU records treatments on paper and reconciles charges afterwards, losing revenue in the process. Instinct starts from the inpatient orders and derives charges from them. For an emergency hospital the missed charge capture recovered is usually the number that justifies the purchase, not the interface. Buyers are emergency and specialty hospitals, referral centres and increasingly general practices via the primary care edition. The trade-off is that pricing is not published, the product is narrower than the incumbents on general practice retail and inventory workflows, and a mixed practice may find the treatment sheet strengths irrelevant to most of its day.

What people use it for

  • A twenty four hour emergency hospital where treatments are ordered on a sheet and currently reconciled to invoices by hand at discharge
  • A specialty referral centre running multiple services on one hospitalised patient that needs a shared, current treatment plan across shifts
  • A hospital losing measurable revenue to missed charge capture on inpatient treatments and fluids
  • A practice that already relies on Plumbs for dosing and wants drug reference and interaction checking inside the record rather than in a separate tab

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Instinct Science.

  • No pricing is published at all, so a practice cannot compare it against published competitors without a demo and a sales conversation.
  • The design centres on inpatient treatment sheets, so an appointment driven general practice pays for strength in a workflow it barely uses and should evaluate the primary care edition on its own merits rather than the hospital reputation.
  • Retail, inventory and reminder marketing workflows are thinner than in long established general practice systems, so a practice with a significant shop or food business may need workarounds.
  • Plumbs and ScribbleVet are separately licensed even though the same company owns them, so the tidy single vendor story still arrives as more than one line on the invoice.
  • It is a smaller vendor than the corporate owned incumbents, which is an advantage on responsiveness and a risk on acquisition, and veterinary software has consolidated heavily in recent years.

Answered, with sources

Questions people ask

Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

Is Instinct only for emergency hospitals?

No, there is a primary care edition, but the product design and its main advantage come from inpatient treatment sheets and hospital workflows.

Is pricing published?

No. Everything runs through a demo and a quote.

Does it include Plumbs?

Instinct Science owns Plumbs, but it is licensed separately rather than bundled into the EMR by default.

What is the main reason practices switch to it?

Charge capture. Treatments recorded on the digital treatment sheet become charges automatically, which recovers revenue that paper sheets lose.
