Overview

What IDEXX Cornerstone does

Cornerstone is the on-premise practice management system sold by IDEXX Laboratories. It covers appointment scheduling, medical records, treatment plans and estimates, invoicing, inventory, reminders, boarding and multi-location reporting, and it has been in clinical use long enough that a large share of established North American practices have a decade or more of history inside it. It runs on a Windows server on site with client workstations, rather than in a browser. The distinguishing feature is diagnostics integration. Results from IDEXX in-house analysers and IDEXX Reference Laboratories flow into the patient record automatically through VetConnect PLUS, requisitions are generated from the treatment plan, and the Smart Flow inpatient whiteboard connects the same record to hospitalised patient care. For a practice that has already bought IDEXX analysers, this removes a daily volume of manual result entry. It also makes the software and the laboratory contract commercially entangled, which is exactly the point of the pricing. Buyers are established multi-doctor general practices and small groups, usually ones already committed to IDEXX diagnostics. The trade-off is infrastructure and direction. The practice carries a server, backups, Windows updates and the cost of an IT provider, and IDEXX has been steering new and cloud-minded customers towards its browser based products, so a practice buying Cornerstone today is buying into a mature product rather than an actively expanding one.

What people use it for

  • A multi-doctor general practice already running IDEXX in-house analysers that wants results in the record automatically
  • A clinic with unreliable internet where an on-site server keeps the practice working during an outage
  • A practice that boards and grooms as well as treating, and wants those bookings on the same invoice
  • A group needing consolidated reporting across a small number of owned locations

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about IDEXX Cornerstone.

  • The system runs on a server in the building, so the practice pays for hardware, backups and an IT provider, costs that never appear in a comparison against browser based competitors.
  • It is Windows only with no meaningful mobile access, which rules it out for house call and ambulatory work and leaves staff tied to workstations.
  • The interface is dense and dated, so training a new receptionist or technician takes materially longer than on newer systems.
  • Commercial gravity runs towards IDEXX diagnostics, and a practice that later moves its laboratory work to a competitor loses the automation that justified the software.
  • IDEXX is directing new customers towards its cloud products, so investment in Cornerstone is maintenance oriented and buyers should assume a migration conversation within the life of the purchase.

Answered, with sources

Questions people ask

Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

Is Cornerstone cloud based?

No. It is installed on a server at the practice. IDEXX sells separate browser based products for clinics that want cloud.

Does it work with laboratories other than IDEXX?

Results can be handled, but the automatic requisition and result return that make Cornerstone worth its price are built around IDEXX.

What is the real total cost?

The licence and annual support are only part of it. Add the server, backup, workstation refreshes and an IT contract before comparing with cloud systems.

Can it be accessed from home?

Only through remote desktop or similar, set up and secured by the practice IT provider.
