Talkatoo

Veterinary dictation that types into any practice management system without needing an integration

As of 31 August 2026, Talkatoo's pricing is not published; the vendor quotes on request. Speech to text built around veterinary vocabulary, from a company in Prince Edward Island. Softwr lists it under Veterinary. Talkatoo is available on Windows, macOS, iOS, Android.

Overview

What Talkatoo does

Talkatoo is dictation software trained on veterinary terminology, drug names and breed names. It runs on desktop and mobile and converts speech to text in the field the user is looking at. The company also sells an ambient note product that listens to a consultation and drafts a record from it, which the clinician then edits. The distinguishing point is the delivery method. Talkatoo behaves like a keyboard, so it works in any practice management system, any browser field and any word processor without an integration, an API key or the vendor supplying it. That sidesteps a genuine commercial obstacle: practice management vendors control which third parties get integrations and on what terms, and many older on-premise systems have no integration route at all. A tool that needs no permission from the incumbent can be sold to the whole market rather than to the subset the incumbent allows. Buyers are clinicians who type slowly, practices with a record-keeping backlog, and mixed and equine vets writing notes between farm calls. The trade-off is that dictation produces free text. Nothing lands in a discrete, searchable field, so the practice gains speed and loses structure, and any future project that depends on structured clinical data will not be helped by three years of dictated notes.

What people use it for

  • A clinician finishing records after hours because typing during consultations is too slow
  • A mixed or equine practice writing notes in a vehicle between farm visits
  • A practice on an older on-premise system that no modern tool will integrate with
  • A group wanting faster record completion without replacing the practice management system

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Talkatoo.

  • Because it types into whatever field has focus, a stray click sends a paragraph of clinical notes into the wrong patient record or the wrong field entirely.
  • Recognition accuracy varies with accent, background noise and ward acoustics, and a busy consulting room is the worst case rather than the exception.
  • It is priced per user, so a practice with locums and part-time clinicians pays for seats that dictate a handful of times a month.
  • Everything it produces is free text, so nothing is captured in a discrete field and the notes do not feed reporting, recall lists or any future structured data project.
  • Ambient drafting produces a record that reads as complete but may contain errors of omission, and the clinician remains responsible for a document they did not write and may not read carefully.

Questions people ask

Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

Does Talkatoo integrate with my practice management system?

It does not need to. It sends text to whatever field your cursor is in, which is why it works with systems that have no integration programme at all.

Is the dictated audio stored?

Recognition is processed in the cloud. Ask specifically how long audio and transcripts are retained and where, because consultation recordings can contain client personal information.

Will it fill in structured fields in my records?

No. It produces free text. If you need discrete, searchable clinical data, dictation is the wrong tool for that part of the record.
