Bloomreach

Ecommerce search, merchandising and customer engagement sold as three separately bought products

As of 31 August 2026, Bloomreach's pricing is not published; the vendor quotes on request. Bloomreach is three products under one name: Discovery for site search and merchandising, Engagement for customer data and lifecycle marketing, and Content for headless content management. Softwr lists it under Marketing. Bloomreach is available on Web, iOS, Android, API.

Overview

What Bloomreach does

Bloomreach was founded in 2009 in Mountain View and originally sold search and merchandising for large ecommerce catalogues. Content arrived through the acquisition of the Dutch company Hippo in 2016, and Engagement arrived through the acquisition of the Slovak customer data platform Exponea in 2021. Engagement is the part most marketing teams evaluate: a customer data platform with real-time segmentation, campaign orchestration across email, SMS, push and web layers, and reporting built on the same event store. The commercially useful fact is that the three products remain distinct, with different engineering bases and different pricing units. Engagement is priced by tracked customer profiles and event volume, Discovery by search and recommendation request volume tied to catalogue size and traffic. A bundle quote can therefore look like a discount while committing you to a product you would not have chosen on its own. Teams that want the Exponea lineage should say so explicitly, because the Engagement product is bought standalone by plenty of retailers that use a different search vendor. Buyers are mid-market and enterprise retail and consumer brands with a real catalogue, typically replacing a legacy ESP and a legacy site search product at the same time. The trade-off is that Engagement rewards teams with a data engineer available. Its strength is in the flexibility of its data model and its Jinja-based templating, and that flexibility is exactly what a marketing team without technical support cannot exploit.

What people use it for

  • A retailer replacing a legacy ESP that needs event-level segmentation rather than list-based sending
  • Merchandising a large catalogue where site search relevance is the main conversion lever
  • Building weblayers and email content from the same customer profile without duplicating logic in two tools
  • Running campaign analytics over raw events instead of exporting to a separate warehouse and BI stack

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Bloomreach.

  • The three products have separate origins, separate pricing units and separate onboarding, so a single bundled quote hides which parts you are actually committing to.
  • Engagement is priced on tracked profiles, so a customer database that keeps every inactive account raises the bill whether or not those people are ever messaged.
  • The flexibility of the data model and Jinja templating needs technical ownership, and marketing teams without a developer typically use a fraction of the product they pay for.
  • Content is the least invested of the three lines and buyers evaluating it against dedicated headless CMS vendors usually find the gap widening.
  • Support and implementation quality vary between the Bratislava engineering base for Engagement and the US organisation, and escalation paths differ by product.

Questions people ask

Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

Is Engagement just Exponea renamed?

It is the Exponea product line, continued and extended after the 2021 acquisition, with its engineering still centred in Slovakia. Buying it standalone is common.

Do we have to take Discovery to get Engagement?

No. They are sold and priced separately, and plenty of customers run Engagement alongside a different search vendor.

How is it priced?

Engagement by tracked profiles and event volume, Discovery by request volume. Neither is published, and both are annual commitments.
