As of 30 August 2026, Wix eCommerce is free to use. A visual site builder with selling built in and no commission on paid Business plans. Softwr lists it under E-Commerce. Wix eCommerce is made by Wix.com Ltd, launched in 2006, available on Web, iOS, Android.

Overview

What Wix eCommerce does

Wix eCommerce is the selling capability inside Wix, a hosted website builder with a drag-and-drop editor. Selling requires one of the paid Business plans, and on those Wix does not take a commission on sales; you pay card processing to Wix Payments or to a supported third party gateway. It covers products and variants, a cart and checkout, discounts, basic shipping rules, abandoned cart recovery and an App Market of add-ons, and Wix Studio provides a more structured editor aimed at agencies. The old criticism that Wix sites cannot rank has largely stopped being true, since pages are server rendered and the SEO controls are now reasonable, and repeating that criticism is a way to get the decision wrong for outdated reasons. The distinguishing characteristic is the editor, and it cuts both ways. Absolute drag-and-drop positioning lets a non-developer produce a site that looks designed rather than assembled from a template, which is genuinely why people choose it. But that same freedom is why the site cannot be re-themed. A Wix template is not a skin over your content; the layout is the site. Changing template after launch means rebuilding the pages, so a redesign three years in is a new build rather than a theme swap, and that is the single most consequential fact about committing a storefront to it. It is bought by small businesses, studios and single-operator shops where design control matters more than catalogue depth, and where nobody wants to manage a developer. The trade-off is portability. There is no export of a Wix site. Products and orders come out as CSV, but pages, layout, apps and any Velo code stay behind, so leaving means rebuilding the site elsewhere and constructing the redirect map by hand or watching search traffic disappear. Multi-currency and multi-region handling is also thinner than on platforms built for it, which is usually where a growing merchant first meets the ceiling.

What people use it for

  • A small business that wants a designed site and a shop without hiring a developer
  • A studio or service business selling a handful of products alongside a content-led site
  • A single-operator shop where visual control matters more than catalogue or fulfilment depth
  • A quick launch where the priority is being live this month rather than being portable in five years

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Wix eCommerce.

  • A template cannot be changed once the site is built, because the layout is the site rather than a skin over content, so a redesign later means rebuilding every page instead of switching theme.
  • There is no site export, so leaving Wix means recreating pages, layout and navigation on the new platform and building the URL redirect map by hand, and merchants who discover this after cutover lose their search traffic while they work it out.
  • Velo code and installed apps only run inside Wix, so every hour of custom work and every app configuration is written off entirely if you migrate, which grows the switching cost the longer the site succeeds.
  • App Market add-ons carry their own monthly subscriptions, and a store running several of them for reviews, subscriptions, shipping rules and marketing can spend more each month on apps than on the Wix plan itself, which is a normal configuration rather than an unusual one.
  • Multi-currency, multi-region and tax handling are thinner than on platforms built for cross-border selling, so a merchant who starts selling into new territories tends to hit that ceiling before any other, and the fix is a replatform rather than a setting.

Each pairing was judged by two reviewers asking whether a buyer would genuinely weigh the two against each other. The ones that failed were deleted rather than published.

Answered, with sources

Questions people ask

Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

Does Wix take a cut of my sales?

Not on paid Business plans. You still pay card processing fees to Wix Payments or to whichever supported gateway you use, so compare the processing rate rather than assuming zero cost.

Can I change my template later?

No. The layout is the site rather than a swappable theme, so redesigning means rebuilding the pages. Treat the initial design decision as long-lived.

Is Wix bad for SEO?

That criticism is largely out of date. Pages are server rendered and the SEO controls are adequate. The real search risk is migration, since there is no export and the redirect map has to be built manually.

Can I export my site if I outgrow it?

Products and orders export as CSV. The site itself does not. Budget a full rebuild plus a redirect map if you move.

Where do most merchants hit the ceiling?

Multi-currency and multi-region selling, and catalogue complexity. Both are thinner here than on platforms designed for cross-border trade.

Softwr does not host reviews and shows no star rating for Wix eCommerce, because a rating we did not collect is not ours to publish.
