Instacart

US and Canada grocery delivery and pickup marketplace with a paid membership tier

As of 1 September 2026, Instacart is free to use. A grocery delivery app that shops and delivers from partner supermarkets on your behalf, using a mix of employee and gig-worker shoppers. Softwr lists it under E-Commerce. Instacart is made by Maplebear Inc. (Instacart), available on iOS, Android, Web.

Overview

What Instacart does

Instacart connects shoppers with partner grocery, retail and pharmacy chains in the US and Canada. A personal shopper, who may be an Instacart employee or an independent contractor depending on the market and store, picks items from the store shelves and delivers them, or the order is prepared for pickup. Coverage spans thousands of stores including Kroger, Costco, Publix, Aldi and Wholesale Club chains, with delivery windows from same-hour to scheduled slots. The fact that changes how people should think about it is pricing. Item prices shown in the app are frequently marked up compared to the same items purchased in the physical store, a difference Instacart does not prominently disclose at checkout, layered with a delivery fee, a service fee of around 5 percent of the order subtotal, and an optional tip. Instacart+ is a paid membership that waives delivery fees on qualifying orders and reduces the service fee, priced per month or per year, which only pays off for households ordering frequently enough to clear the subscription cost. Buyers are households valuing time over price, and the trade-off is that convenience is bought twice, once through item markups and again through fees, so a grocery bill delivered through Instacart from a given store is reliably more expensive than the same list bought in person at that store.

What people use it for

  • A household with limited time wanting groceries delivered same day from a familiar supermarket chain
  • A frequent orderer comparing whether an Instacart+ subscription pays off against per-order fees
  • Someone using SNAP EBT benefits at a participating retailer through the app
  • A shopper who wants to order ahead and collect at pickup to avoid the delivery fee entirely

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Instacart.

  • Item prices shown in the app are frequently higher than the same items in the physical store, and this markup is not clearly separated from delivery and service fees at checkout, making true cost comparison difficult.
  • Shoppers are a mix of employees and independent contractors depending on market and retailer, and gig-classified shoppers have raised pay and working-condition complaints that have drawn regulatory attention in several US states.
  • The service fee and delivery fee combination means a small grocery order can carry a large proportional surcharge, making Instacart uneconomical for frequent small top-up shops.
  • Item substitutions chosen by a shopper when stock runs out can differ meaningfully from what was ordered, and refund handling for a poor substitution requires customer support intervention.
  • Availability is limited to the US and Canada, and even within those countries, delivery zones and retailer coverage vary block by block in a way that is not obvious until you enter an address.

Questions people ask

Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

Are Instacart prices the same as in the store?

Often not. Many retailers set higher item prices for Instacart orders than for in-store purchase, on top of delivery and service fees.

Does Instacart+ pay for itself?

Only for households ordering often enough that the waived delivery fees exceed the subscription cost; occasional orderers usually do not break even.

Are Instacart shoppers employees?

It depends on the market and retailer; Instacart uses a mix of directly employed and independent contractor shoppers.
