TrueLayer

Open banking payments and data across the UK and Europe, with the largest share of UK variable recurring payments

As of 31 August 2026, TrueLayer's pricing is not published; the vendor quotes on request. TrueLayer moves money directly between bank accounts in the UK and Europe and reads account data under open banking rules. Softwr lists it under APIs. TrueLayer is made by TrueLayer Limited, available on Web, iOS, Android.

Overview

What TrueLayer does

TrueLayer is an open banking provider covering payment initiation and account information across the UK and a large part of Europe. Pay by bank moves funds directly from a customer bank account without a card, settling faster and at a fraction of card cost, and TrueLayer handles the authentication redirect, the payment status lifecycle, refunds and payouts. On the data side it reads balances, transactions and account holder identity for verification, affordability and onboarding. The capability that decides shortlists is variable recurring payments. VRP lets a customer authorise repeated payments within limits they set, giving something close to a card on file experience over bank rails, and TrueLayer processes the majority of UK VRP volume. Critically, VRP is a UK construct. It exists because of UK regulatory work, and European equivalents are on a slower path, with commercial VRP expanding into ecommerce in the UK during 2026 while EU adoption trails. A European merchant reading UK VRP marketing will not get the same product in its own market, and that mismatch is the single most common misunderstanding in this category. Buyers are marketplaces, wealth and trading platforms, iGaming, crypto exchanges and subscription businesses where card fees or chargebacks are painful. Pricing is not published; expect per-payment fees that decline with volume plus a platform component and a minimum. Ask which specific banks are covered for payments in each country you operate in, because coverage and conversion vary sharply by bank and by market, and a headline European figure hides poor performance at individual institutions.

What people use it for

  • A UK subscription or top-up business that wants card-like recurring collection over bank rails using variable recurring payments
  • A trading or crypto platform funding accounts instantly by bank transfer where card deposits carry chargeback risk
  • A marketplace paying sellers out to verified bank accounts with name checking to reduce misdirected payments
  • A lender verifying income and affordability from bank transaction data rather than uploaded statements

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about TrueLayer.

  • Variable recurring payments, the strongest reason to choose TrueLayer, is a UK construct, and European businesses expecting the same capability in their market will not get it on the same timetable.
  • Payment conversion varies substantially by bank, and a bank with a slow or broken authentication journey drags results down regardless of vendor, so aggregate coverage numbers say little about your actual mix.
  • Pay by bank has no chargeback mechanism, which merchants like until a customer disputes a purchase and finds no scheme protection, making it a poor fit for categories where buyers expect card style recourse.
  • Pricing is unpublished and varies by market and product, so multi-country merchants cannot model cost without a full sales engagement and often find rates differ significantly between countries.
  • Open banking authentication requires the customer to leave the checkout and authorise in their banking app, and that redirect remains the largest source of drop-off compared with a stored card.

Answered, with sources

Questions people ask

Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

Is VRP available outside the UK?

No. Variable recurring payments are a UK capability. EU adoption is on a slower path, with UK commercial VRP expanding into ecommerce during 2026.

What does TrueLayer cost?

Not published. Per-payment fees are quoted by volume, market and product, usually with a platform component and a minimum commitment.

Are there chargebacks on pay by bank?

No. Bank transfers have no card scheme chargeback mechanism, which removes that cost but also removes buyer recourse, so it suits some categories and not others.

Which countries are covered?

The UK plus a substantial set of European markets under PSD2, though bank-level coverage and conversion vary by country and should be checked for your specific mix.
