Overview

What Token.io does

Token.io provides account to account payment infrastructure: payment initiation, variable recurring payments, refunds and payouts across a bank network spanning the UK and Europe. Merchants and payment service providers use it to take pay by bank payments that settle directly from the payer's account rather than over card rails, and to make outbound payouts from the same connectivity. The commercially decisive difference from cards is economics. An account to account payment carries no interchange and no chargeback scheme, so cost per transaction is typically far below card acceptance, particularly on high value payments where card fees scale with basket size. The corresponding loss is the consumer protection and dispute framework that cards provide, which is why pay by bank lands first in bill payment, account top up, iGaming, investment funding and government payments rather than in general retail. Token.io became the first third party provider admitted to the German giroAPI scheme in 2025, giving access to a scheme covering a large number of German banks and enabling recurring and future dated payments there. HSBC invested in the company in 2025. The realistic trade offs: conversion depends on each bank's authentication journey and some are slow enough to lose customers; variable recurring payments for commercial use are still expanding rather than universal; and the merchant still needs a settlement and reconciliation arrangement, because Token.io initiates payments rather than acting as the acquirer of record.

What people use it for

  • A utility or telecom collecting high value bills where card interchange makes acceptance expensive
  • An investment or trading platform funding customer accounts without card chargeback exposure
  • A payment service provider adding pay by bank to its merchant proposition without building bank connectivity
  • A German merchant using giroAPI scheme access for recurring and future dated bank payments

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Token.io.

  • Account to account payments carry no chargeback scheme, so merchants gain cost savings but consumers lose the dispute protection cards provide, which limits adoption in general retail.
  • Conversion depends on each bank's own authentication journey, and slow or broken bank redirects cost sales in ways the merchant cannot fix or even always diagnose.
  • Variable recurring payments beyond sweeping are still being rolled out unevenly across banks and markets, so a subscription use case may be supported at one bank and not another.
  • Token.io initiates payments rather than acting as acquirer of record, so merchants still need settlement, safeguarding and reconciliation arrangements elsewhere.
  • Coverage and feature parity vary by country, so a pan European rollout means different capabilities and different bank behaviour in each market rather than one uniform product.

Answered, with sources

Questions people ask

Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

Does pay by bank remove card fees?

It removes interchange and scheme fees, so unit cost is normally far below card acceptance, particularly on high value payments.

What about chargebacks?

There are none. That is the cost saving and the consumer protection gap, which is why it suits bills, top ups and account funding more than retail.

Is Token.io regulated?

Yes, it is an authorised third party provider under UK and European open banking rules, but it initiates payments rather than holding merchant funds as an acquirer.
