What IBM MQ does

IBM MQ moves messages between applications with assured, once-only delivery. A message put inside a transaction is not visible until commit, and is not lost if the application, the network or the machine fails. It runs on z/OS, IBM i, AIX, Linux, Windows and in containers, with queue managers clustered for availability and a native replication option. That combination, especially the mainframe support, is why it remains the transactional backbone of core banking, payments and insurance systems long after everyone else moved to Kafka for analytics. The distinguishing property against Kafka is a semantic one that is often muddled in procurement. MQ is a queue: a message is consumed once and gone, with transactional participation in a two-phase commit alongside a database. Kafka is a log: messages are retained and replayed by many independent consumers. They solve different problems, and organisations that replace MQ with Kafka to save licence cost frequently rebuild transactional semantics badly in application code. The commercial facts that matter. Licensing has moved from Processor Value Units to Virtual Processor Cores, with IBM MQ at roughly 312 US dollars per VPC per month and MQ Advanced at roughly 583, on a minimum one-year term, plus a pay-as-you-go option near 1.02 dollars per VPC hour. Container licensing is only available under Kubernetes with the IBM License Service, so a Podman or plain Docker deployment forfeits the optimised metric. Distributed and z/OS estates are licensed under different models and treating them as one problem is a common audit exposure. MQ Advanced adds Advanced Message Security, Managed File Transfer and MQTT telemetry.

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about IBM MQ.

  • Virtual Processor Core licensing is capacity-based, so an over-provisioned server is charged for cores the queue manager never uses, and consumption ratios differ between MQ and MQ Advanced.
  • Container licensing requires Kubernetes with the IBM License Service, so Podman or plain Docker deployments cannot use the optimised metric and pay materially more.
  • Distributed and z/OS platforms use different licensing models, and organisations running both routinely misapply one to the other, which surfaces as exposure at audit.
  • Operating MQ needs specialist skills that are increasingly scarce, and the pool of engineers who understand channel and queue manager administration is shrinking with every retirement.
  • IBM’s acquisition of Confluent in March 2026 puts MQ and Kafka under one vendor, which resolves the integration story but removes the competitive tension that kept renewal negotiations honest.
