What Protolabs does

Protolabs is a manufacturing service, not a software licence, and the distinction matters when comparing it with anything else in this catalogue. What it offers as software is an online quoting platform: you upload a CAD file, the system analyses the geometry, returns real-time pricing against material and lead time options, and flags manufacturability problems such as undercuts, thin walls or unreachable features before you commit. The processes behind it are CNC machining, injection moulding, industrial 3D printing and sheet metal fabrication. The distinguishing capability is speed of the quote and of the parts. Automated design for manufacturability feedback arrives in minutes rather than after a day of email with an engineer, and machined or printed parts can ship in as little as one day. There is no minimum order quantity, including on injection moulding, where Protolabs will cut an aluminium tool for a handful of parts and scale the same tool to a hundred thousand. That combination is what a hardware team is actually paying for. Alongside its own factories, Protolabs operates Protolabs Network, formerly Hubs, a marketplace of more than 250 partner manufacturers that covers materials, finishes and volumes the in-house factories do not. Network CNC parts start around 65 US dollars. Buyers are product development teams under schedule pressure and companies needing bridge production before hard tooling. The trade-off is unit cost: for anything past a few thousand parts, a conventional supplier will beat Protolabs on price, and the platform is only free because the margin is in the parts.

  • This is a manufacturing service, not software you licence, so comparing it with CAD or MES tools is a category error; the platform is free because the margin is in the parts.
  • Unit prices are well above a conventional job shop at volume, and past a few thousand parts a traditional supplier or an offshore moulder will beat it substantially.
  • The instant quoting engine only handles geometry it can analyse automatically; complex parts, unusual features or tight tolerances fall out to a manual quote and lose the speed advantage that justified the premium.
  • Material, finish and tolerance options are constrained to what the automated process supports, so designs needing a specific alloy temper or an unusual surface treatment are pushed to Protolabs Network and lose the one-day lead time.
  • Protolabs Network parts are made by third-party partners rather than in Protolabs own factories, so quality consistency and communication depend on which partner is allocated, and the buyer does not choose.
