Where each one falls short
Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.
Perforce Helix Core
- The free tier covers only a handful of users, which maps badly onto how the product is actually used, because asset version control is needed by the whole studio, artists and audio staff included, not by the engineers alone.
- Beyond the free tier pricing is quoted per seat and renewed annually, and it does not scale down for contractors or outsourcing partners who touch the depot for a single milestone and still consume a full licence.
- It is centralised, so when the server or the connection to it is unavailable, work stops for everyone; edge servers reduce this but add another system to run.
- Administration is a genuine role. Depot layout, streams, protections, proxies, checkpoints and backups all need someone who knows Perforce, and that person is expensive and hard to replace.
- Exclusive checkout prevents merge conflicts on binaries but blocks colleagues outright; a file locked by someone on leave needs administrator intervention, which turns a holiday into a production stoppage.
PlayFab
- A title in development mode can only have up to 1,000 lifetime player account creations
- Multiplayer server costs are billed per VM compute hour on Azure virtual machines and vary by region and VM family
- Network egress is charged per GB and varies by zone, at $0.05 in Zone 1, $0.08 in Zone 2 and $0.20 in Zone 3
- Pricing is consumption based across a set of separate meters rather than a flat plan
- The vendor states prices are subject to change and that actual costs depend on the PlayFab plan and usage

Answered from the vendors’ own pages
Perforce Helix Core: Why not just use Git with LFS?
Git assumes text files that merge and a full local history. Game projects have terabytes of unmergeable binaries. LFS handles the size but not the locking or the clone time, which is why studios past a certain size move to Perforce.
PlayFab: How much does PlayFab cost?
PlayFab uses a usage-based consumption model. The Free to Start tier includes 1,000 lifetime players per title and 750 free VM hours. Pay-as-you-go has no minimum; Standard plans start at $99/month and include $400 in monthly meter value; Premium plans start at $1,999/month.
SourcePerforce Helix Core: How much does it cost?
Perforce does not publish prices. It is free for a small number of users and workspaces, after which licensing is quoted per user annually and depends on volume and support level.
PlayFab: Is PlayFab free?
PlayFab offers a Free to Start tier for development with limits: up to 10 development titles and 1,000 lifetime players per title. Additionally, pay-as-you-go pricing has no minimum commitment and covers only actual usage.
SourcePerforce Helix Core: Can programmers keep working in Git?
Partly. Helix4Git bridges Git repositories into the Helix Core depot, but it is another component to run and does not remove the difference in workflow between the two systems.
PlayFab: What are PlayFab's consumption meters and pricing?
PlayFab charges per various consumption metrics: PlayStream Events cost $6.60 per million, Profile Reads cost $0.33 per million, Profile Writes cost $7.15 per million, and Profile Storage costs $1.54 per GB. The first 150k Economy V2 requests monthly are free.
