Perforce Helix Core

Centralised version control for multi-terabyte binary game projects

As of 30 August 2026, Perforce Helix Core is free to use. The version control system most console and AAA studios run, because it handles terabytes of art assets and locks binary files that cannot be merged. Softwr lists it under Game Development. Perforce Helix Core is made by Perforce Software, Inc., available on Windows, macOS, Linux.

Overview

What Perforce Helix Core does

Helix Core is a centralised version control system built for repositories that Git handles badly: multi-terabyte depots, thousands of large binary files, and teams where artists and designers commit more bytes than programmers do. It provides exclusive file locking so two people cannot both edit an uncompressed texture or a level file, a streams model for branching, and proxy and edge servers so studios in several locations are not all pulling from one machine over the internet. Unreal Engine ships with direct Perforce integration, which is a large part of why it became the default in console development. The commercial catch is the shape of the free tier. Helix Core is free for a small handful of users and a small number of workspaces, which suits a programming team and does not suit a game studio, because the people generating the assets that make Perforce necessary are artists, animators, designers, audio staff and outsourcing partners. The moment the whole team needs access, you are on quoted per-seat pricing renewed annually, and the seats that push you over the threshold are exactly the ones that only touch the depot for one milestone. Perforce does not publish that pricing, so a studio cannot budget the transition without a sales conversation. Studios buy it because the alternatives fail at their scale, not because they enjoy it. The trade-offs are real: it is centralised, so losing the connection to the server stops work; it requires an administrator who knows Perforce; and programmers arriving from Git find both the model and the tooling alien. None of that changes the fact that at fifty artists and two terabytes of assets there is very little else that works.

What people use it for

  • A studio where artists and designers version hundreds of gigabytes of uncompressed assets
  • Unreal Engine projects that want the engine to talk to source control directly
  • Console development where platform holders and publishers expect an auditable centralised depot
  • Distributed teams with outsourcing partners who need path-level access to part of the project only

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Perforce Helix Core.

  • The free tier covers only a handful of users, which maps badly onto how the product is actually used, because asset version control is needed by the whole studio, artists and audio staff included, not by the engineers alone.
  • Beyond the free tier pricing is quoted per seat and renewed annually, and it does not scale down for contractors or outsourcing partners who touch the depot for a single milestone and still consume a full licence.
  • It is centralised, so when the server or the connection to it is unavailable, work stops for everyone; edge servers reduce this but add another system to run.
  • Administration is a genuine role. Depot layout, streams, protections, proxies, checkpoints and backups all need someone who knows Perforce, and that person is expensive and hard to replace.
  • Exclusive checkout prevents merge conflicts on binaries but blocks colleagues outright; a file locked by someone on leave needs administrator intervention, which turns a holiday into a production stoppage.

Pricing

What Perforce Helix Core costs

Helix Core

On request

  • Free for a small number of users and workspaces, intended for evaluation and very small teams
  • Beyond that, per user licensing quoted annually by Perforce sales
  • Cloud-hosted and self-managed deployments both available
  • Add-on products for code review, build automation and Git interoperability priced separately
  • No public price list, so budgeting requires a sales conversation

Capabilities

Features

  • Exclusive checkout

Locks binary files that cannot be merged so two people never edit the same asset

  • Very large depots

Handles multi-terabyte histories and individual files of hundreds of megabytes

  • Streams branching

A structured branching model with defined flow between mainline, development and release

  • Proxies and edge servers

Local caches and replicas so distributed and outsourced teams are not pulling across the internet

  • Unreal and Unity integration

First-class plugin support in Unreal, plus Unity integration and Helix Swarm for review

  • Fine grained permissions

Path-level access control so outsourcers see only the parts of the depot they are given

Questions people ask

Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

Why not just use Git with LFS?

Git assumes text files that merge and a full local history. Game projects have terabytes of unmergeable binaries. LFS handles the size but not the locking or the clone time, which is why studios past a certain size move to Perforce.

How much does it cost?

Perforce does not publish prices. It is free for a small number of users and workspaces, after which licensing is quoted per user annually and depends on volume and support level.

Can programmers keep working in Git?

Partly. Helix4Git bridges Git repositories into the Helix Core depot, but it is another component to run and does not remove the difference in workflow between the two systems.
