Documentation, community answers and partner material are substantially richer in French than English, which slows adoption for anglophone teams and makes hiring implementers outside Europe difficult.
The AGPL licence on Community obliges you to publish modifications if you offer the software as a network service, which is a genuine blocker for anyone planning to resell a hosted version.
The implementation partner network is concentrated in France and neighbouring markets, so buyers elsewhere have few local firms to tender against and limited support timezone coverage.
It is a smaller ecosystem than Odoo or ERPNext, so there is no large third-party app marketplace, and functionality the suite lacks has to be built rather than bought.

Icertis

The value comes from structured clause and metadata models, and building those is legal and commercial work your own people must do, so a project resourced as an IT deployment stalls at the point where somebody has to decide what the standard clauses actually are.
This is priced and scoped for large enterprises, so an organisation with a few thousand straightforward agreements pays for capability it will not configure and would reach most of the same benefit with a lighter mid-market product.

Axelor: Is Axelor really free?

The Community edition is genuinely AGPL open source with no licence fee, but it lacks several business modules and has no vendor support, and you carry all hosting and upgrade work.

Icertis: How is this different from storing contracts in SharePoint?

A document store answers where the contract is. CLM answers what is in it. If your questions are about locating files, a document store is enough. If your questions are portfolio wide, such as total exposure to a clause type or which agreements renew next quarter, you need the terms as data.

Axelor: Can I upgrade from Community without losing data?

Yes, Axelor states that a Community deployment can move to Pro or Enterprise keeping its database and configuration, which is unusual among open core vendors.

Icertis: Do we need a legal operations team to make this work?

In practice yes, or someone doing that job under another title. The system enforces decisions about standard language, approval thresholds and acceptable deviation, and if nobody owns those decisions the workflow becomes an approval queue with no rules behind it.

Axelor: Do I need Java developers?
